Sandhill Cranes Out My Office Window

Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:31 am

Hi Folks,
Despite getting 2.5 feet of snow on Easter, and another 6 inches of snow last night, I just saw my first real sign of spring out the window. Sandhill cranes. They nest in the tundra a few hundred yards away every year but it is welcoming to see them after such a long winter so far. There were 4 of them, I could hear them before I saw them, they flew by too quick for a photo sorry.

Beautiful birds - and tasty too! (and before I get yelled at - I didn't shoot them, my stepdad did - but we did eat them, no waste)

Well I almost hit one once as it took off right in front of my car. We both made it out OK with out a scratch.

Hell yeah! I cant wait until the fall, we have a spring waterfowl hunt out here, but the cranes are off limits until fall. Damn good eatin and a challenge to shoot.

Yeah ANC sure did, the low coming out of Siberia was supposed to miss us, but we took the full hit. We still have easily 3ft still on the ground, I noticed on the news that there was little or none in ANC and surrounding areas. We have a 55 gallon burn barrel that you can barely see in the yard, only the top ring of it.

You know, the heat in Maui gets to me sometimes, but on the other hand, snow in April (and May and June) isn't high on my list of cherished memories either!

Hey I understand, I was basking on the K beaches in kehei the first week of March. Was barely snow on the ground then and we all thought it would be a nice spring. Well we have been hammered by spring storms ever since. Ruined the rest of the winter for me. Tough to go from the beach to the snowblower.

Dude, I'm heading back to work tomorrow - and checking the forecast . . . +5F and 20mph wind - I wanna  cry

I've had enough winter already . . . I know, I know - I live in Alaska . . . blinding flash of the obvious . . .

I just got the camper outta the shop yesterday - pre-flight for the summer season - and I'm ready for the mosquito season. . .  laughing . Had enough snow already . . .

It was raining at my house yesterday about 0600, I later found out, it was snowing in east Anchorage at that time . . . it's April dangit - knock it off already . . .  biggrin

Yeah not much talk of global warming from the locals these days. Predictions are for a nasty mosquito and noseeum season. But berries should be plentiful. Also the mighty Nushagak River has a good forcast for fish this year...Dillingham still the Salmon capital of the world.
Why is it most of these posts turn into the Alaskans bullshitting with each other about AK stuff? gotta love it.

It's an Alaskan thing . . . there are so few of us and this place is so big, never know what's going on from one part of AK to another . . . .

I mean, it's 800 miles from ANC to where I work . . . . it's another 600 miles to the State Capitol . . .

Oh, and 'cuz we're cool . . .  wink

You can have them back. The damn things crap all over the golf course down in Florida and don't take a low line drive off the tee as a hint to clear the course and let us play through. I even got chased by a pair of them a few years back. Damn northerners!

On the way to my grandmother's funeral a few years back we clipped one on US 1 in Florida in late January. Damn birds blended n with the road and we couldn't see them until it was too late. Seeing that they mate for life I wonder what ever happened to the one that lived.

When do they come back South?

I had one of them sneak up on me on the tee of a golf course in Florida.... gray color blended in with the bush that was next to the tee and I didn't see it. The damn thing screeched in my ear and I almost sh*t!  scared

On the plus side, also got to see a bald eagle and an armadillo during that round.  Smile Thankfully, this time, no gators!

Now that's damn funny! And I can totally see it happening.

I aim for those with the golf cart. I hate the little critters but I want a stuffed one for my office at home.

We must have been off winning a National Title in something.  biggrin  My home course had at least one on every hole. Usually they left you alone unless they were guarding a nest. Never saw my grandfather move that fast as he did that day.

On the first hole of the little course in my grandparents' park (same hole as the sandhill crane scare job, above, but different year), there was a 6' gator sitting on the rock next to the green, and wouldn't you know I hit my ball that way. I carefully played the next shot never taking my eyes off that alligator...

I thought the sure sign of spring up here was when the first "26 glacier cruise" add played on the radio.

That's a pretty cool ride . . . if you haven't done it, do so . . .

It's even better now that you can drive to Whittier and aren't dependent on the AKRR to get through the tunnel.

It's a great ride for visiting family and friends . . .
