Well I know where my GAY dollars are going to go on my next visit to the local Grocery Store.

KRAFT: THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU...APPARENTLY NOT.

Kraft Foods held it's annual stockholder's meeting today. As you may recall, Kraft and its stockholders haves been the target of a "massive" effort by Evangelicals to force the global food company to withdraw its financial and promotional support for the upcoming Gay Games. Kraft put the proposal forth for a decision by stockholder. It was rejected receiving less than 1% of the vote. So much for the power of the Evangelical version of Christ.

I'm having Kraft Mac & Cheese for dinner!

Yahoo KRAFT! I'm not a big Mac 'n Cheese fan but I'll double up on the sharp cheddar next time I'm at the store.

I'm hoping that the fear mongering that the far right has used to stir their faithful has seen its day. I'm sure there are some more state battles we're going to lose before it gets better, but on the corporate level, the tide seems to be shifting back.

It's my impression that many who might have signed on to such an action are unaware of just how many Kraft products they probably use on a daily basis.

Let me see if I understand your point. If the only brand I used from your list was Stove Top Stuffing, and I decided that I could go to a competitor for a similar product ... then the boycott would be okay?

Are you suggesting that if these people were aware at the scope of Kraft products in their daily lives, then there wouldn't be a boycott? That they'd accept the company supporting these dirty 'homasexshalls'?

Does that also mean that the religious right should focus their boycotting efforts on small stores and lesser known brands?

I say let these "christian taliban" groups boycott EVERYTHING. That store clerk at Wal-Mart may have been a lesbian ... Boycott Walmart (all of them!!!!) I bet that bank teller has thought about being with other men ... Better close all your accounts (and there might be more of them at the other banks too!!!! OH MY GOD a homo DROVE on this STREET!!! I better not leave the house!

This is gotten so rediculous! Who's letting these people have a microphone? Wouldn't it just be easier to move to a planned community near some bayou and name it "Smug Island" or "Righteous Bay" or "Judgement Pass"?

These "Christian Taliban" groups are no different that the wack-jobs that were responsible for the Salem Witch Trials; the slave traders; Senator McCarthy and his anti-communist manifesto that had thousands of innocent peoples' lives destroyed.

These people draw obscene conclusions from badly interpreted passages of the Bible and call them FACTS. Then, they terrorize ANYONE who challenges their ignorance.

I just don't get it.
Can't they find hobbies or something?

You may be right Alireza, but Redngold did have a point when she quoted one of my sentences. It was intolerant also, and not condusive to having a fair discussion.

Redngold - Not to single you out, but if you could help me understand something, I would find it helpful. These Religious Righteous people who parade the streets openly advertising their hatred for homosexuals ... What are they afraid of? Why do they care if man or woman is gay? Do they think gay people are hurting someone?

If it's because "it's morally wrong" or "it goes against God", my question still stands: So what? Why do you care what people you don't even know do? What gives the Religious Right the authority to tell the rest of the world what is morally right or wrong?

You do not see me trying to ram my views down EVERYONE"S throats....

I have never said you could not be christian..unlike the christian right, I know they neve said people could not be homosexual...but they have said go ahead but you will get NO rights....

My favourite qoute on the subject:

"And finally, to Rob in Albany who felt my aside was proof of my intolerance and hypocrisy: Joking about Christianity isn't evidence that I'm intolerant—hell, I'm perfectly willing to tolerate Christians. I have never, for instance, attempted to prevent Christians from marrying each other, or tried to stop them from adopting children, or worked to make it illegal for them to hold certain jobs. I don't threaten to boycott companies that market their products to Christians, and I don't organize letter-writing campaigns to complain about Christian characters on television.

It would indeed be hypocritical for me to complain about fundamentalist Christians who've done all of the above to gay people if I turned around and did the same thing to Christians—but, again, I've done no such thing. Intolerant? Hell, I'm a model of tolerance! "

I have to agree with you here, there isn't a lot of difference in ideologies between the two of them, oh I'll get flamed for that no doubt but the truth is the truth, can't expect unbalanced extremists to handle the truth.

Gay extremists annoy me as much as Christian extremists, Airbus extremists...etc...etc..etc. Trouble is some people don't know they have crossed the line.

Red, how quickly you forget that the second you choose to MAKE others believe what you choose to, you BECOME AN OPRESSOR (just like the taliban). I have no problem with you keeping your backwards ideas, and showing us how ignorant those ideas are on a daily basis, but the second you start 'making companies' pay for, or make laws about those ideas is when you cross the line. Here you can talk about your beliefs, fine, but stop acting like you have the god given right to force those idea on others... and yet you whine about intolerance...  Yeah sure

Altria Group is Philip Morris, they changed the name of the holding company because of bad publicity. Kraft was spun off, but I believe Altria is still the largest shareholder.

Agree and disagree with the above. If the christian right tries to force me to believe in what they believe in, they are indeed an oppressor that I will resist with all my ability. However, if the christian right wants to boycott something or someone, that is their right. Quite frankly, if they want to boycott Kraft, it will simply prompt me to buy more - not less - Kraft products.

I'm already boycotting Kraft for not labeling products that contain genetically modified ingredients.

Besides, most Kraft products taste artificial to me and the "Mac & Cheese" boxed dinner is a perfect example. What's with the neon-orange 'cheese' powder anyway? Looks about as good as it tastes. Little kids seem to love it though. Even I ate it before I knew what the hell "taste," "nutrition" and "empty calories" meant.

Interesting to note that Karft is owned by Phillip Morris, the tobacco company. Hasn't the tobacco industry traditionally allied itself with the Republican party?

(I know the company is now called Altria, but I still refer to it by its older, more sinister sounding name.)

Not all.

That's certainly true, which is why I was careful to not say "all".

I love it when the 'liberal media' simply says 'Corporation X contributed to both parties,' even when the actual contributions were 70/30 or more in favor of the Republicans. If this is the 'liberal' version of domestic news, I'd hate to see what a 'conservative media' would look like.

I don't quite understand. The link I gave quite clearly had a breakdown of dollars and percentage. Were you referring to something else?

Yes, I was referring to domestic US television. For instance, in many reports after Enron failed the domestic television news merely stated that Enron had contributed to both political parties, as though the difference in contributions wasn't that much. In reality, however, it was apparently greater than 70/30 in favor of the Republican platform. CBS mentioned the actual split in this article from 2002:

I see, so it was just a generalized, unsubstantiated rant you were making before. Thanks for clearing that up. Thought something with my link was faulty!  Smile
