yeah, it would be cool to be able to travel in time. I would wish that I would have been born and raised in Minnesota so I could be together with my now ex-girlfriend every day. The distance made it pretty difficult to maintain a relationship.

Not really, because if I was born in another place or time then I would not be who I am today, whether for better or for worse. Decisions would have been made differently, ideas could have been changed, and, really, there is nothing wrong with the time or place now or past in my life. Nah, don't think I'd change it.

Oh, how I wish that is true. Ironic post! Alas my friend, fluent English is never spoken in the US. It merely suffers from the delusion that it does.

Just as it's masses are gleefully happy and sometimes proud to admit their blissful ignorance of science and mathematics, its only a matter of time that this dubious status will be accorded to a greater portion of the American people who take pride in speaking a language that they think is "fluent English". Soon they will realize that the said language is nothing more than a combination of rabid slang terms, grammatical errors and MTV level sophistication. Meanwhile, the rest of the increasingly globalized world will speak at least 3-4 languages including fluent English, a good majority of the population of the hyperpower USA will insist that only its language be taught and spoken. Hmmm, wonder what language it is??

Just takin' it eazy y'all....

Born in the South during Civil War times....

However, that's not because I would condone slavery.... it's because those Southern cities like Charleston and Savannah were really nice.

After much consideration, I decided I'd rather have been born a squirrel lucky enough to be standing next to Brad Pitt during the era when he wore bell-bottoms.

Generally speaking, I wish just about everyday but then I know wishful thinking can cause headaches if one does not do something about it. IMO, there is no point to imagine a guilty pleasure if you cannot have it in some way, at some point in the future. But I do catch myself making unrealistic wishes, those that have to do with going back and changing something. Sometimes I do not care what I change if I can relive one very special instance in my life. But see, I know I'll have more so there is little point in wishing for them, just got to work towards them. Some of you may know what I'm talking about.  Smile

I cannot imagine the butterfly effect from that...  Wow!

Yes I have thought of it thinking something would change, but that is the problem, EVERYTHING will change, we cannot pick and choose but that is what dreams are about.  Wink

I wish I grew up with maybe one of my favorite actresses and cheer them on and be there for them, does that count? Big grin

For just about as long as I can remember I have always felt the time I was made for lies somewhere in the past. Not sure exactly how many years are we looking at but I have begun to accept that I am a loser stuck here for my entire life and that I can't do anything about it. Really felt there are more like me when I read this thread which touches on one of the factors. Personal Time -- What Happened? (by AerospaceFan Apr 25 2006 in Non Aviation)

Come on pal! You are too young to not be able to do both of those if "thats" all you want different. Save some money and travel to Hawaii to surf on those waves and I am sure there will be institutions in your own country to help you to get American accent. In short, if these were the things that meant that much to me, I wouldn't be wishing I was born in different place or time, I'd be busy making it happen. You can do it, go for it!!!

I was born in Los Angeles. My mother brought me all the way over there from Athens so that I could be born and get an American passport.

Even though life has become infinitely easier because of that, I still wish that I was born in Lebanon and raised there instead of moving around from Greece to Lebanon to Cyprus to London to Turkey and to the US. I consider myself very, very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do all that, but a part of me wishes we had stuck it out in Lebanon. Life would have been different; I don't know if it would have been better or worse, but I will definitely be spending some extended time in LB soon enough.

Oh, I don't think youth has anything to do with it. For folks not from here, they cannot completely loose thier accent and sound like everybody. Ironically, society does have its taboos and some accents are a turn on (highly dependent on who is famous at the time though).  Smile

Hmm... Sorry that didn't cross my mind, but I do believe if you can do anything about losing or gaining a certain accent, its easier the younger you are. I mean look in the US, the parents of immigrants from say, Asia Pacific (China, Japan etc) have very certain accents while their children who were either born here or were brought here at a young age master both languages in native accents. Myself being an immigrant, I came here at the age of 20, 3 years ago. It wasn't very difficult to adapt for me. But now that I think about it, maybe British accent might have been more difficult to adapt to, had I been to Britain.
Anyway my point was the cheer L-1011Alpha up. While he may not be able to get his wish perfectly, among almost all the rest who mentioned their reasons to have been born at a different place and time, he is the one who can still get very close to his dream.

Not really. In fact I think I've lived through some of the most extraordinary times and events in all of human history - so far. Astonishing stuff passing by me every day. I've loved the life I've been lucky enough to live. I look at photographs of the times and places and people of my life with an aching nostalgia. And yet it goes on . . .

That said, there are any number of events I would love to have seen:

  • The collapse of Red Rock Pass in Idaho, draining ancient Lake Bonneville out through the Snake - Columbia rivers. The peak flow was approximately that of all the world's great rivers combined. It tapered off, but the floods probably lasted a year. What an awesome sight.

  • Same for the Atlantic spilling in through Gibraltar to flood the Meditteranean basin and the Med flooding through the Bosporus to fill the Black Sea.

  • Lee and his army lined up against Meade and his at Gettysburg. I don't think I'd have the heart to watch what followed though.

  • The Tunguska explosion from a safe distance.

  • The age of square-riggers.

  • The Baldwin Locomotive Works Eddystone plant at peak production.

  • Rome, or Athens or Egypt in their glory.
  • Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

I don't think I could be more fortunate with my current standings, so I don't think I would change anything.

It would be nice to see what it will all be like in 200-300 years though.
