Let's please have some fun!!!
As I hit my 6 month delayed 5,000th post I look to find a little more meaning to this post then the typical 'Love me; the attention whore that I am' 5000th post.
While the timing isn't exactly right, I am mourning the time of the year in 2002 when I lost a dear Hungarian friend Lajos (Lewis) Magony. Now I am not looking for sympathy for the loss of my friend, so please spare us the ‘oh I’m sorry replies’. I cried the few tears I had back then.
I met Lajos at a computer store I was managing in Miami. Before I knew it, his friendly manner and inquisitive ways had weaseled hundreds of dollars in free tech support and computer advice away from the store. Now this wasn’t a tragedy as he had a fishing buddy, and usually gave me and my family something good to eat more often then not.
As I got to know him I found out that he was a pilot in the Hungarian Air Force and one of the things we had in common (despite him being almost old enough to be my dad) was the fact we had both flown in a Blanik. I got to visit his very nice house and got the trust of his very protective German Shepard dogs, Rocky and Sassy.
Now at his house was something I certainly didn’t have at home, which was a pair of networked computers!! The beauty of this was he loved to play first person shooters, and our favorite game was Heretic. We would spend countless hours playing heretic against each other and having a good time.
Now this brings me to the whole point of this post. When Lajos and I battled it out playing first person shooters, we called each other every single name in the book!!! He’d kill me, I’d call him a douchebag, I’d kill him, he’d call me an asshole. And so on, and so on, ad nauseam. The INCREDIBLE thing about this though was when we finally had to call it quits for the day we would just look at each other, laugh our asses off, have a good handshake, and say goodbye as if we hadn’t insulted each other at all.
I think the nature of those exchanges is what I miss the most and got me on to a.net in the first place. I loved reading the slam fests and the users piling onto each other, making sheep jokes, etc. now those days somewhat appear to be over as some have lost their sense of humor about such things. I just want to state un-equivocally that I have not lost mine!!!
While I will not engage anyone in that manner here (without explicit permission), I think we ought to have a ‘Slam list’ or a group of users who aren’t going to get their shorts bunched up if someone calls them a name in the heat of a debate. Maybe we can somewhat return to the ‘funnier’ side of a.net that got me here in the first place.
