LHMark Shoots Assault Rifles

Sun Apr 30, 2006 4:52 am

I went shooting with a rather military-oriented friend of mine today, my first assault rifle experience. I got to fire a FN-FAL and an old Russian SKS.

It was actually pretty fun, albeit extremely loud. I'm proud to say I displayed reasonable accuracy with the FN at 100 yards.

Not so much with the SKS.

Yup they are fun.

Although I have issues with calling an unmodified SKS an assault weapon.

Speaking of rifles, what type is this?

Looking at the front end it looks like an M-14.

It definately started life as a M-14/M1A.

Modernized airborne version of the sniper version of the M14....M21?

What's the difference?

Next time, we're taking an AK and an AR-15. My buddy has quite a collection.

Dont feel to bad about not shooting well with an SKS, they are known for not being really that accurate, they are fairly inexpensive, cheaply built, with a military surplus rifle, you get what you pay for.
Since I live in the middle of nowhere AK we dont have a recycling center and especially not one for electronics, so we dispose of them the fun with, at the hot end of a firearm.
Although not really an assault rifle, I have a stainless ruger mini-14 but with a 30round magazine, it has lots of firepower. A few notes about the mini-14, well at least mine, it is very loud, the short barrel makes that thing bark hard. At twilight the muzzle flash is impressive, more so than other guns I have seen shot at low light. The ejector is very efficent. It throws the spend casings well over 30 feet. Try not to have many people off to your right when shooting one, hot brass down someones shirt will ruin thier day.

I was married to a fully automatic Canadian C7 last summer while undergoing Air Force basic officer training. Man could that girl put hair on your chest.

You'll most certainly have fun with these! Not sure what you're shooting at but bowling pins and gallon jugs filled with water make for fun times.  Smile

It's a stripped down M-21 with accessories rails and accessories (a light, a retractable stock, Harris bipod, etc). Very accurate and reliable.

Modified SKS:

Things to note:
Caseing deflector
Muzzle break/flash hider
20rnd detachable magazine
Bi-pod
Custom thumbhole stock

Yes, this SKS will drill tacks.

I have another that is Mil-Spec that will also drill tacks. They are both Albanian. That's the secret with SKS's. Some countries produce magnificent ones, some produce crap. Norinco makes crap.

The AK is a fun weapon to fire. Same round that the SKS uses, but generally a little louder and less accurate. From behind the weapon it makes a funky crunch/clank when it fires.

The AR/M-16 series are like fireing toys. There is almost no felt recoil in the full size weapons. If you can't drill tacks with an AR... ...you must have gotten a bad load of ammo.  wink

You'll enjoy shooting the AR-15 . . . if you have a decent, well cared for weapon and decent ammo, it will be fun. Almost no recoil, and easy to handle.

Perhaps he'll have one with a tactical sling on it - makes paying attention to rule #2 much easier . . . when done shooting: weapon on safe, let it hang. If the sling is properly attached you can't possibly cover anything with your muzzle . . . . except the ground.

Remember the 4 Rules of Gun Safety.
