Gretna F.C. Set To Go Into Europe!?!

Tue May 02, 2006 8:26 pm

Simply astonishing, if Rangers lose to Hibs tonight, then Scottish Division Two Champions, Gretna FC, will be in European Competition next season.
How it works:

Celtic - Champions League
Hearts - Champions League
Rangers - UEFA Cup
Gretna - UEFA Cup (Qualify through Scottish Cup, where they play Hearts in the final who will have qualified for the Champions League if Rangers lose tonight).

Of course, if Rangers win tonight, and Hearts win tomorrow, then Gretna will be in Europe no matter what.

Strange days in Scottish Football  crazy

No chance of that.
Any European football is likely to be played at Motherwell

We had the same situation here in Germany a couple of years ago. 1.FC Kaiserslautern played in the UEFA cup due to making it to the national cup final against Munich, I think, who were already qualified. Kaiserslautern played in the second division when winning one or two rounds of the UEFA cup.

It's similar in Wales - though the team in Europe are the best team in the Welsh league, most of them fail to hit attendances of 400 for most games! Would be interesting to see Barcelona fit into TNS's ground.

Excuse my ignorance, but I wasnt even aware of Wales having an own league. I thought Welsh teams were playing in the English leagues. How many teams are there?

FWIW, Gretna has a population of 3,000 people, and have only been in the Scottish league for 4 years

Which does raise a question:

In the exceptionally unlikely event of one of the Welsh sides playing in England qualifying for Europe, through the cups or leagues, whose allocation do they use? Is it England, or does one of the Welsh League sides drop out?  Confused

Well, I presume as a club in the English leagues, they will go through as one of the English teams as they play in the English leagues. But it is rather unlikely  Wink
