A.net MSP Meet?

Fri May 05, 2006 5:18 am

There was one a while ago to say farewell to KL at MSP, but the weather turned out to be rather crappy and I heard that not alot of people showed up. Does anyone want to try again for this summer? I won't mention any dates in order to see what flexibility people have.

Let me know if this is something you would like to do!

I'd probably be able to go, depending on my work schedule, between 5/11 and 7/31. Before and after that I'm in PHX.

There are other nearby things to do if it becomes a two-day (or more) thing.

For out-of-towners needing a hotel, I suggest the Country Inn & Suites at the Mall of America. The train that runs from the Mall to MSP (and downtown) is just around the corner. The Mall and hotel are about three miles from MSP.

I'm glad that this topic has gotten some responses so quickly. So from the majority so far, maybe we should shoot for July?

Quoting N808NWatMSP (Thread starter):

I agree, spend some time at the Mall of America, go downtown (on the LRT?), and maybe a Twins game (if they start winning?)...

Quoting N808NW (Reply 3):
I dont want to be the one who plans it though... Im not good at that

Don't worry, I'll do my best, but any helping hands to organize this would be most appreciated. I'm pretty tied up with school all the way until summer, and then my full-time work schedule kicks in.

And AIM could be a good way to communicate; my screen name is tdi2007.

Thanks!

During the planning stages, I think it would be best to communicate by a.net IM or in this thread. It worked great for the LAS get-together. Everyone's ideas and suggestions were available for all to see and all to discuss.

July would be good. Only on a weekend for me. I have relatives so I do not need a place to stay.

I am familiar with the Minneapolis St. Paul area, but not really with the area around MSP. Perhaps it would be good if we met somewhere that is close that we can all find relatively easily, and then go from there to see some sweet red-tails.

Ok, so let's try and meet in July, since that seems to be the best month to achieve maximum amount of people attending. Should we go for a weekend meet? Personally, Fridays and Saturdays would be the best days for me because those are my off days from work this summer. Let me know guys!

Actually the mall is right across the street from the airport. Speaking of the mall, the top level of the parking garage would be a good spotting location when the aircraft arrive on 35.

July 7th and 8th sound good for everyone? Or we can do the 8th and 9th.

Before we lock in specific dates, let's give it a few more days to hear from others that may be interested in attending.

The 7th, 8h and/or 9th of July all work out fine for me, but do you think it's too close to the wake of the 4th of July? Perhaps some people calling off work for the holiday won't be able to call off for the weekend...?

The Science Museum has an exhibit called Body World through September. Looks pretty interesting. Ticket price for 3D theater, IMAX, Body World, and the regular museum is $29.50 for adults.

Also, if anybody is interested, the State Capitol is also in St Paul with free admission.

The Zoo is a short drive away in Apple Valley, and admission is $12 for the zoo, or $19 for Zoo/Imax combo.

While at the Mall of America, the Underwater Adventures could be an interesting stop. $14.95 for admission.

Either way, while spotting at the airport, parking is plentiful at the MoA and the tram is only $1.50 each way, with free travel between the terminals.

There is a cheap hotel in Lakeville that I stayed at once. Only $39.99/night, for a big room with a mini fridge, balcony, and microwave. Also has an indoor pool.

Gas, well, that depends on how much you plan on driving. Meals, well, do you eat McDonalds or do you prefer Timberlodge? And prices for some attractions I posted above.

Hope to see you  Smile

~From what I'm reading we still need to decide on the following basic information~

Who is currently in charge of organization of this meet?
- I have some ideas, but Im not sure who to relay them too.

Have we decided on an actual date yet?
- Appears we are shooting for late July, maybe the weekend of the 23/23?

I would suggest we use the Mall of America as our home-base for gathering. The Mall of America provides easy access and free parking for those who are driving and public transportation is readily available if we choose to take the light rail train or bus as our main mode of transportation. Many area hotels also offer free shuttle rides to the Mall of America if I remember correctly.

What other types of activities (if any) do we want to plan as a group?
- Mall of America/Knotts Camp Snoopy
- Science Mueseum of Minnesota
- Minnesota State Zoo
- Valley Fair
- Golfing
- Casino

Overall in my opinion, the Twin Cities are a fairly cheap place to stay and visit; most everything is reasonably priced.
