Tons Of Pictures From Iraq

Sun May 07, 2006 7:39 am

It's been quite awhile since I shared some pictures.

Between me, my friends and my crew, we've amassed a ton of pictures. I don't know if I've shared some of these already, so excuse me if I double-post some pics.

Anyway enjoy:

82nd Airborne? HA! The 101st is where's it's at!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/200.jpg

So there I am... flying along fat, dumb and happy, going at 150kts, roughly 100ft above the terrain. When all I catch is a quick black streak coming right for my window. I didn't even have time to turn my head. ... a freakin' bird hit and exploded on my window. I am amazed that there wasn't even a crack. I've know quite a few who had the bird come right through the window. All that remains:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/203.jpg

When you're flying along back home on a training mission there is one thing you simply don't want to see... warning lights. When you're flying on a combat mission, there is one thing you simply DON'T want to see! ...WARNING LIGHTS!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/204.jpg
Turned out to be nothing life threatening. Only a blown seal.

The insurgents fear us. We come swooping in fast and low, drop off troops and then orbit above and pick them off with our miniguns or M-60s. And that's just ONE helicopter. I wonder what they think when they see this!!!:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/206.jpg

Recently in the Mil-Av forum I talked about a mission where they found a sizable weapons cache:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/211.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/212.jpg

The flight line on a hot Iraqi morning. God I love this job:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/219.jpg

I have a friend who an infantry CPT and I got to ride along on a convoy with him down into the heart of Baghdad. It was really interesting. Do any of you recognize this building??
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/220.jpg
... it's the one that can be clearly be seen in the videos of the opening shots of the invasion with "Shock and Awe"

One of Saddam's incredible palaces:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/250.jpg

Hey! How many of you can say that you've taken a piss in the same toilet that Saddam Hussein has!?? I can!

Just before you touch down, the sand causes "brownout" and it's like being in a cloud. Remain steady, no sudden control movements and make a smooth touchdown:

Hey... what aircraft is this?

Iraqi countryside:

the last of them....

Yet another gate guard:

You would be amazed at what you can find in the desert. You'll be flying a long, literally in the middle of nowhere... and you'll fly over something that definitely does not belong there:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/237.jpg

Again... what the hell is this doing out here in the middle of nowhere!?
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/242.jpg

Kuwait: Ships unloading our birds when we first got here:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/245.jpg

Kuwait: INCREDIBLE sunset:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/244.jpg

BOOOOOOM!!! -- OED taking care of weapon caches with some good ol' explosives.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/246.jpg

We were flying south and a sandstorm moved in fairly fast. We landed at a near by FOB and waited it out. Here is what our helicopter looked like after the storm:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/247.jpg

There is a ton of useless, junk military equipment scattered across the entire country. Looking back... Iraq must have been quite the formidable country before we kicked their asses in the Gulf War. Anyway, I believe it's a SA-3 Soviet built SAM:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/248.jpg

Occasionally the alarm will sound and everyone has to go to the bunkers b/c some form of indirect fire is coming in. A mortar went off near a housing trailer:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/259.jpg

More country/city side of Iraq:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/258.jpg

A helicopter's worst nightmare:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/255.jpg

A forest of palm trees:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/251.jpg

Iraq has some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen....
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/249.jpg

Just prior to leaving for Iraq... I brought my wife out back to teach her how to shoot. She is going to be all alone during the nights and I thought it was important that she know how to defend herself. Well after about an hour of trying to teach her... I don't know what's more dangerous... her with a gun, or a home invader! God I miss her.  frown

Anyway, hope you all enjoyed the pictures. I'll build up some more and shoot them out to y'all in another 3-4weeks again. Take care.

-UH60

You can increase the "Max Picture Size" in the account options to something larger than 512kb which seems to be the default value. But better than that would be resizing the pictures to 640 by 480 pixels, which is perfect for this forum and will reduce the file size significantly; and now I'm done with the computer stuff.

I'm glad you're OK; no matter what I may think about the invasion and the war, I commend you for doing a very good job of getting everyone in, out and about safely... and for the psychological stability that's apparent in this post.  Wink For someone who's never been anywhere near combat, it's hard to imagine what it's like. That weapons cache would have been ugly had it been used alongside a road... wouldn't want to think about what it could do.

As for the sunset: truly incredible... but the toilet? That's so ugly it's downright insulting.

Keep up the good work. I'll have to get my Navy friend coming over soon to get some pics as well from his Seahawk. Stay safe though those bugs don't look much worse than what is in Florida.  biggrin

Great pics, thanks for sharing. If you care the "bug" is called a Darkling Beetle. The SA-3 in that shot is odd. It looks like someone attached SA-2 fins to the booster. You can see the more typical square fins on some of the other missiles in the background, weird.

Thanks again for the pics and your service. Stay safe.

Excellent photos UH-60 . . . .

Damned sand storms wreak havoc with tank engines too . . . sand is so fine it coats everything, gets stuck in everything, and turbines do NOT find it user friendly.

Hoooah . . . head down and powder dry!

Press the fight.

This Saddam Hussein had one misguided taste, I must say. Thinking about it, there was a lot more misguided than only his taste.
Good thing you cleared out that weapons cache. I think I have never seen so many mines in one place.

The sunset really looks unreal. For some reason it remembered me of Star Wars Episode 4.

And I must say you apparently have a good taste in women. She look like a certain Michaela I was friend with a couple of years ago.

Stay save, take care and come back soon.

God Bless, UH60...my dad (USMA '82, now NHARNG CW4) spent a year in the 101st's AOR flying medevac missions. (And we lived at Mother Rucker for awhile when I was a little one) I can say that you're a better photographer than he is, thanks for the photos!

Thanks for all that you all are doing, you'll be in my thoughts.

As for the bugs, I've been told that a good cure for boredom is to find a camel spider, put him in the freezer, and then tie a string leash around his neck. I had photos of this but deleted them  Smile

Well by morning it's in the 80s. The majority of the day is over 100, at about 100-110. But the nights get COLD!! While it only gets in the 60s or 70s... the massive temperature spread from the high to the low really makes you feel cold.

Also, the complete lack of humidity really is deceiving. We are constantly drinking water... even though you feel like you are not sweating.

Quoting 11Bravo (Reply 9):

Yeah the Iraqis are strange like that. I've seen a large amount of "modified" military technology. But the thing is... they certainly weren't modifying equipment to make it better/more efficient. Instead, we suspect the whole reasoning behind these kit-bashes were due to a lack of available replacement parts. When things broke, it looks like they just took parts from other items... even if there were not identical pieces of equipment... and threw them together.

Quoting Bushpilot (Reply 12):

lol - yeah, that thing never gets any use with us, so why not put it to use?

Plus... they don't use toilet paper!!! It drives me nuts. Notice there isn't even a toilet paper handle on the wall. I hate using an iraqi made latrine, but I've learned to carry a small roll of TP.

Yeah! We were flying along, and I looked out and saw this mosque. No roads, no villages, no power lines. NOTHING. But there is all kinds of stuff like that out here. Like that other picture... I think it was an aircraft external fuel tank. Vehicles, crates, hunks of metal... all just sitting there preserved by the desert heat and dry air.

Yeah, what can I say... she's hot!

Her natural color is lighter than in that picture. You see, she has an annoying habit of constantly changing her hair color.   And it's crazy... because we're not talking dramatic changes! We're talking a few tints lighter or darker! And she asks me, "How do you like my hair?" And I don't freakin' know... new haircut? new style? new color? Which is it?!? Because I can't see a difference! AHHH!

Anyway... here are better shots. This is right before we left to go home after our honeymoon. ... As you can see, she is quite tired. I suppose I should have let her get some sleep at some point during that week!

Nice pics indeed of everyday life in Iraq. Keep the pictures coming especially the aerial shots.
BTW it will be 140 degrees in a month or so and you won't be feeling cold at night either. You will be drinking a lot of water by then (room temperature water is the best) and if you aren't urinating every few hours you are not drinking enough.

Catfish flightline is a nice place to work.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c119/Jaffair1/Iraq%20Shots/Blackhawksinaqueue.jpg

And compared to Saddam my toilet just wasn't up to scratch. It has since been dug up and a soft ball field built on top of it.

Incredible pictures!

Just as an aside - how much contact are you getting with the Iraqi civilians? How do they respond?

At and rate, Stay safe out there bro - can't begin tell you how proud I am of all you guys.

How was the Caribbean? I dont know, I havent seen the pictures yet!

:D Yeah... we didn't see much beyond the room. The place we stayed at was really nice. It had a private balcony with a hot tub and plenty of the bubbly! Good times. Good times.

Any sign of WMD??

Yeah... you see that picture of Saddam's toilet? Well what my crew chief left behind in it, some might have considered a weapon of mass destruction.

Contact... a lot. Actual meaningful interaction... very little.

There is a good amount that work on the bases. They clean/fix/build/sell/etc... They're all screened prior to entry, and they're fairly friendly. One annoying thing: they constantly try to sell you shit. And it's useless shit! And they don't take no for an answer.

But I've noticed:
The men always seem indifferent to us.
The women always seem afraid of us.
And the children are in love with us.

Thanks for the response! I'm working on an article about civil society (ie: what do individuals do in their spare time) over there - so again, thanks, any info helps! Let me know if you're ever in DC, I'd love to buy you a beer.

Do you mean the locals or the troops?

Because spare-time for the troops equals trouble!!

Quick story **warning if you are an animal lover, DO NOT read the following**

We had four days off, which was awesome. But by day three we were getting very bored. So here we are at this FOB in the middle of god damn nowhere. A beddoin came through and tried to sell us stuff. Like I said... most of the stuff is total junk. But this guy had some chickens! Sweet! Dinner!

So we bought the entire lot (probably overcharged us by a factor of 10x!) and we sent him on his way.

Well we had one chicken left and a buddy had a "great" idea. Can chickens fly? Well lets find out!

The 'hawk was started up, rotors and tie-downs clear, and straight up he went to about 100ft. As he hovered there... the crew chief kindly pushed the chicken out the side door! The damn thing flapped its little heart out. It wasn't doing to bad for the first 30 feet. And then it happened.

The chicken just lost the will to live! It had nothing left in him and he just gave up and stopped flapping. The freakin' bird turned into a dart and rocketed down to the ground. SPLAAAAAATTT!!

The chicken:

Amazing first hand impressions!!
This is truely amazing, to watch and read what you post, while serving in Iraq...

Don't know about you guys, but I have never ever ever had such insight into a historical crisis before.

Amazing UH60!

You just promise me you stay clear of any hostile ground fire!  Smile
