Strangers Who Expect You To Chat

Wed May 10, 2006 7:51 am

This annoyed me and since airliners.net is a gripe fest, I thought I'd rant here.

My mother, who has Alzheimer's, was hospitalized last evening and I only got about 4 hours of sleep. I was exhausted this morning and had a lot weighing on my mind thinking about her plus my obligations at work.

So I'm waiting in line at the coffee counter at this place, just deep in my thoughts, and the guy in front of me apparently had said hello me and I didn't realize it. So he said it again and I said "Hi." Again, I was pretty out of it and really needed the coffee to wake up.

So then he says, "You must be from the North, right? People up North don't like people talking to them." and walked away offended that I wasn't miss Chatty Patty. (BTW, he didn't appear to be a Southerner, so this isn't about the Southern hospitality thing.)

Okay, sorry, but sometimes people have stuff on their minds and don't necessarily have random people on the radar screen. It really annoys me.

Is it just me, or do you find idle chatter annoying at times? God I really hope I'm not turning into one of those people who are annoyed by the general population.

--Rant off. --

You should see the "Seinfeld" episode "The Kiss Hello".

It's okay. This guy has no reason to be offended he's really rude. Does he really expect you to have anything better to do then entertain him?
And since he's the one starting the converstation, he should be the one starting to contribute, which he didnt really do. I mean did he expect you to perform a one man show for him just because he said "hi"?

When you talk to strangers you expect to get rejected, and it's really undecent from him to be offended, just because you did not give him the level of enthousiasm that he expected.

In short i think that guy is an idiot.

Hey, sometimes you just need to be left alone, although most of the time people can't pick up on that. A lot of times at work, especially early in the morning all i want to do is say 'hi, how are you' etc and then walk off, but i find i get very pis$$ed of when people follow me trying to carry on a convo. I just want to be left alone to get on with things and then talk. It's like when ure day dreaming about something and someone comes up to you to talk about nothing at all......you want to tell them to go EFF themselves but you just end up staring into the distance nodding and smiling. However, i think the worst thing are those people that like to invade your personal space, ie the ones that stand so close you can almost kiss them, and when you step back the step towards you! You step right, they follow you etc! Many a time i've said to people ' if you want to wear my shoes, just ask, dont step into them while i'm wearing them!'. Am i anti-social...no! I just like to have my space and time respected!

Cheers

There's a guy at work who keeps touching my arm when he speaks with me. Sometimes I feel like punching him when he does that.
