Go-kart Racing For The First Time Ever Today! :D

Wed May 10, 2006 5:34 pm

Hey! I am going to race 12 of my friends in a gokart today! What is driving a go-kart like? I guess it is far from the same as driving a car. Anyway I'll be leaving in an hour. I might be able to take some pics and upload them when I get home

Go-karting is great.

Just remember as you will be left foot braking not to press the brake at the same time as the accelerator or you will quickly spin. Most of the time, except for the very tightest corners you won't need to brake at all - just lift off the acclerator slightly, before flooring it again as you go part way throuh the corner.
Just when I thought I could see light at the end of the tunnel, it was some B*****d with a torch bringing me more work

thanks for the advice! I had no idea that the brake is in the left side lol.. must be very confusing, especially when you have to drive home again in a car

The most bizarre thing about the whole go-carting experience is the drive home afterwards. It takes all of your mental faculties to convince yourself not to drive agressive racing lines around every corner, cutting across several lanes of traffic.

You will find you get home a little quicker than the drive there though.

Lucky guy you are Go-Kart is so great !! If there is someone to explain you the basics of driving a Go-Kart it is better, how to take turns etc... Don't break at the last second, try to drive smoothly, use gloves, take your own helmet (if you have one), you're going to experience pure driving pleasure !

Cheers,
Alejandro

That is so true. Last year a load of us went Karting in as part of a friend's stag weekend. Afterwards we all had to get into cars and drive to the city centre to the hotel we were staying in. Driving down the dual carriageways and around the roundabouts we were all trying to get past, outbrake, etc. Utter chaos - good jobb there weren't many other cars on the roads  Wink

Hey all, I am back in one piece! Big grin
I was amazed about how good of a condition it requires of a person. We were all sweating after an hour of driving. Also, on the way back, it did indeed feel really slow in the real car! It was such a weird experience! I didn't make it to the top 3, but came in as #5 out of 13 hehe

I forgot to bring my own helmet, but we did wear gloves :P

You lucky lil bugger I'd loved to have gone GO-Karting today ,Shame i have school, If you enjoyed it you should join a club because I used to be in a Go-karting club, they basically trained us how to take corners properly and when to accelerate and the best position to sit in in the kart.

The best way to take a corner E.g. a right hander is to race up to it on the left side of the track, full acceleration, and turn into the corner while braking, once you feel the kart stop sliping away go to half throttle then slowly up to full throttle. it can save about 0.5s through a corner. Thats what i was thaught anyway.

I really want to have a go at Go-Karting again, I used to do indoor racing although ive done an outdoor race in majorca on holiday.

hey! Yeah Big grin it was really hard! My arms started to hurt too because you use a lot of power turning the wheels all the time and you lean to the left and the right in the corners. The track was pretty big! Best lap of the day was 1 minute and 35 seconds. That should give you an idea of the size of the track :P

that sounds really cool! But this go-kart track was an hours drive away, so its a little too far away to join. Maybe if there is a track closer to me, I would concider it hehehe

That was one of my error at first : putting to much energy into the steering wheel. You can drive smoothly, really. The tension and adrenaline of the race makes you forget that you're grabbing the wheel too tight in your hands and you finish the race exhausted with your arms on fire ! That's why I suggested you to drive smoothly = cool and relaxed with a clear mind, it helps to do a good race.

Now with a friend I'll organize a race here in GVA !  Smile

actually I would think that you would win against most of us as you are younger and presumably a lot lighter. I found out yesterday that weight of the person driving the go-kart is very very important!

There is an indoor circuit nearby. Its great, but is pretty expensive so i don't go too often. Instead, my mate has 4 or 5 off road buggies which we race around his field, which is just as fun and doesn't take £28 a time out of my pocket.

absolutely not any go karter knows what seperates the men from the boys is not taking your foot off that accelorator for the entire race. And no I have never been kicked out of the place for being dangerous.
