England Flags On Cars...

Tue May 16, 2006 4:42 am

Ok I have been biting my nails over starting this topic but time to cave in....

Has anyone noticed the extreme amount of England flags that you attached to the window going around?

I counted over 30 on the motorway today.... and I was on there for 6 miles.... Mad!

Is it just me that seems to notice this?  Silly and yeh its for the footy thing..

I would find it odd if you didn't like in England and/or it was during some major worldwide Football competition.

Now I would find it odd if that happened over here... instead of US flags or Yankees flags.

To me it seems a bit naff.

Also it is a risk to your car, of being broken into, due to the gap left in the window from where the flag attachs to the car window. The gap is probably big enough to fit a item through to brake the window.

No, not just you, i noticed that on the M6 today, there were a few. Not 30though! World Cup fever has hit!
Where i work we have sold out of them in the last week, they seem pretty popular! Must confess, i have them for my car aswell!
Lets just hope that the players live up to the hype! With Steven Gerrard in a rich vein of form we stand every chance! The country will probably grind to a stand still on match days!

Err no, but I've seen a few Portuguese ones.  duck

I would've thought they'd be banned on cars, unless of course the high quality 'made in China' plastic sticks have been tested in a wind tunnel first.

So do any Scots/Welsh actually support England, or is it whatever team happens to be playing AGAINST England?

There's nothing wrong with showing a bit of patriotism and support for England during the world, it happens during every tournament. It's certainly not 'naff' or strange. When the world cup finishes the flags will disappear.

I visited England during WC2002, and wondered about the many flags hanging from houses, cars, etc, and not even knowing what the heck that flag was for. Up to that point, I had believed that the Union Jack was the only flag, and England, Wales, and Scotland didn't have their own flags. Stupid me. Now I know.

I remember during the 2002 cup I was in Toronto and there were flags from all of the countries it seemed almost everywhere, due to the large ethnic communities in the city. I saw lots of Brazilian, Turkish, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, German flags, etc all over. I'm sure there will be a repeat this time around.

LOL! Because the average person who breaks into cars carries "tools" with them only applicable once a window is cracked a half inch!! It's called your fist my friend (elbows, knees and feet also seem to work well,) and you don't need a window to be cracked open a millimetre let alone a half inch to use effectively!!!

On to the topic, this is not an uncommon practice around these areas to support your local/favourite hockey team once the playoffs begin, so I don't see why you Englishppl are so dumbfounded by it! Toronto is also infiltrated by tons of these various national flags around World Cup times, you think seeing a St. George on a car is bad, wait till you come to Toronto and have to deal with friggin' Argie flags on various cars! Then you can complain!

Until then... GO ENGLAND!!! The birthplace of football!!

Sincerely, a proud English supporter aboard!

I just wish, that as a nation we would be proud enough to fly out national flag at all times and not just when major sporting events come round.  Sad

When you travel around the world, and I've particularly noticed this in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, you see many private houses, as well as public buildings (as you'd expect), that fly flags or pennants in their national colours.

Maybe encouraging this sort of display of pride in your nation of residence should be one of the first requirements in the governments attempts to instill "Britishness" in to society  Smile

I have also noticed this is prevelant in Northern Europe. We have the American/Polish flying infront of our house for different/holidays or occasions here in suburbian Chicago. Right now the Polish flag is flying for the World Cup at the very least until the group stages are over. Im sure the US Flag will go up for at least 1 day for Memorial Day.

Nah, we don't need to. Other inferior nations parade their flags to show how wonderful they are. We Brits sit in quiet contemplation knowing how much better we are, we don't need to parade it.  snooty   Wink

I've never understood this about England. The only thing that seems to encourage patriotism is the English football team's appearance at at a major tournament.

The Welsh and Scottish manage to feel patriotic all year round regardless of sporting events? (Though that's perhaps because they know they haven't got a snowball's chance of getting through to the World Cup etc...?)

You say the word "encouraging" and then use the word "requirement" in the space of one sentence. The flying of a flag should be spontaneous, it shouldn't have to be "required". If people aren't proud enough to fly the flag off their own bat, then the country needs to do something about it (and I DON'T mean making people fly it).

That's because Welsh and Scottish patriotism is a way of strengthening their identity as seperate from the English. The English don't feel they have to differentiate themselves from anyone. This is absolutely true, and it's the reason why the majority of the English are vaguely uncomfortable with the English flag, and see it as somehow nationalistic (and all the associated negative connotations that go with rampant nationalism).

I think it has become popular to do this recently after a lot of anti-British rubbish in the domestic news - a few years ago a pub was told to take down a cross of St George flag for fear of offending people. I think a lot of people think that the British/English nationality is being diluted and are almost trying to restore it.

I remember seeing on Top Gear (I think) years ago that someone had actually bothered to work out how much extra drag all these flags created and thus how much it increased fuel consumption for the entire nation.

Who the hell funds these kind of reports?

Personally I think it looks naff, but then again, I am no football fan, in fact I couldn't name more than 2 or 3 members of the England squad. I am told that's pretty bad.

Precisely in what way is it naff? Flying a flag is the most visible way an individual can show support for his/her country. Have you ever been to America? There's flag waving over there 24/7, they even have flags on TRAINS and AMBULANCES!! We in the UK only bring out the flag on special occasions, i.e World cups etc..
