The World Cup In Germany Has Its First Victim

Wed May 17, 2006 5:25 am

And it's the Nici AG, the distributor and manufacturer of the World Cup Mascot "Goleo". The company has today filed for bankruptcy at the Coburg Administrative Court in Germany.

Prior to the bankruptcy filing, managers from Nici have said that problems with the marketing of the Goleo mascot were one of the contributing factors of their financial problems. In fact, their problems come from the fact that Goleo has not become the success it was expected to become.

Full article (in German): http://focus.msn.de/finanzen/news/wm-maskottchen_nid_29026.html

Curious that now we hear Goleo has been a sales disaster. I've been out of Germany for quite a while, so I'm not in the loop about this.

I think it's cute... And that's the issue here, it looks too cute for a football mascot.

The ball on it's hand can talk. I saw it on TV. Now that is scary.

What the hell is that? Dog, wolf, llama, camel, stoner hippie? People might be more inclined to buy it if they actually knew what it was.

They must have been on the little 'Pillen' with the   happy faces on them when they came up with them

That's all they put in the mix?  Wow! Must be that German efficiency.  Wink

I though the mascot was the ball not the Llama/sheepdog/stoned bear hybrid  Smile

Well as far as mascots go, remember that spring thing Homer Simpson devised for the Springfield olypics? - now that was bad.

Doubtful, because this mascot was created by the Jim Henson Company.   Nici only has the licence to produce and distribute them.

I prefer their antimascot counterparts, Prolleo and Pulle Pilz.

But why, why did they rip the German nickname of Bones, aka Star Trek's Dr Leonard McCoy?   Here in Germany, it's Dr McCoy who gets called "Pille".

and why did they have to chose a lion....nothing to do with germany.
A lion would have been better for South Africa 2010

I agree. An Eagle would have been more appropiate, because the Eagle is part of Germany's coat of arms.

Why oh why do major events like the Olympics and the World Cup have to have mascots. All of them as far as I recall for many years have been ignored, quickly forgotten and good examples of bad maketing. Often they have to be so sensitive to so many ethnic, social, racial, religious, gender and cultural issues that you end up with some horrible mix (kinda like the 'lion' above) that no ones wants or ignores. It would be better to spend the money on something that benefits the communities where the matches are held or some of the poorer countries that participate in the events.

I can only agree to that. But in their greed, it's very unlikely with the current FIFA.

That is one of the dumbest mascots I have ever seen, behind most of the Olympic mascots.

It's supposed to be lion (we have so many here you know ... ) but it's called "hosenloses Wuscheltier" in Germany, which translates very loosely to "trouserless wispy animal".

Wow, that's a lion? I guess I can kinda see that, but I never would have guessed that on my own. Thanks guys.

At least it is better than the thing "Izze", the mascot for the Atlanta Olympics. That looked like a glob of toothpaste with eyes and legs.
