Trip To NY In July - Huge Problem

Thu May 18, 2006 7:11 am

Hey everyone, I'm kind of in a real sticky situation. My girlfriend and I, 18 and 19 years old, were planning a 3 night trip to NYC from July 17-20. We have already purchased our tickets (American through Dallas since its a question we all ask lol), we've made hotel reservations at the Ramada New Yorker, and have even already purchased Broadway tickets. So right now we are pretty much at the point of no return.

So here is the problem. After spending nearly $1000 so far, I just learned that most hotels require their guests to be 21. No where in my hotel reservation process was this made clear. I have a credit card and all that, so it went through. What am I to do now? Are there any hotels that allow 18-19 year olds? Im open to anything because I want this to work. Will the hotel even check? Please help me out.

I'm pretty sure Hotel Pennsylvania is 18 for check-in. If that's definitely true, then there has to be other hotels around that require only 18.

How about a youth hostel? Just have to be 18 for them and cheap too. Check the websites for locations in NY City, although it may be difficult to make a reservation. I would call the 1-800 phone numbers for various hotels/motels in the area to check their policies. I would also consider staying in a nearby part of New Jersey and commute by bus to the city each day as it would be a lot cheaper and perhaps not as picky as to miminum ages. Oh, by the way did you know you can get a pass for $7.00/day each for unlimited use on the NYC system subway and busses? That will save you some costs if you have to spend more money on your hotel room.

I don't remember what hotel it was, but I definitely checked in somewhere in New York and also in Orlando FL when I was 18. All they cared about was the credit card. Just call the hotel and ask - I'm pretty sure it will work out.

Checking into Hotels was never a problem for me before I was 21 in NY. As long as you can pay I don't think they care.

I have heard nothing good about that place. A year or two ago I booked that place, and when I emailed Expedia to find out why they hadn't confirmed my booking, I received a call from Expedia strictly advising me not to stop there due to all the negative feedback and complaints they had received about it.

A friend of mine also stopped there and pretty much confirmed it was awfull.

Did you actually call the hotel to see if they have this policy? Seriously, call the hotel (not the reservation number) and talk to someone. Don't assume that because most hotels have this policy that your hotel has it. Even if they do have an age policy, talk to a manager/supervisor, explain your situation and maybe they will still let you keep your reservation.

I've never had a problem with hotels asking my age.

I stayed in Orlando and Ft Lauderdale when I was only 17 and no-one asked. They do ask for photo ID now in hotels when you are checking in, but I don't think they look at your age.

I would choose somewhere other than the New Yorker though, it's kind of crappy from what I heard. Ditto for the Pennsylvania which has gone downhill in recent years.

The New Yorker does accept student groups, so I doubt it will be a problem.

There's nothing on the website, and I'm sure there would have to be. Maybe the law only applies to hotels with casinos.

Why would they require one to be 21 years of age to stay in a hotel? If you have a valid credit card there shouldn´t be a problem.

Ok....I'm a bit relieved. Because I called the 1-800 number and they said 21, but when I called the hotel itself they said 18 is fine. Thanks guys.

Also someone mentioned the New Yorker isnt all that great? All we plan to use it for is the bed at night. We dont need any luxuries because we will be out all day. Should that be fine? Also, this is both of our first time to NYC. So any tips would be great. Thanks again
