Boy I Didn't Realize How Cool My Sister Is

Fri May 19, 2006 4:15 pm

Hey guys

I never really realized how cool my sister is until today.

Anyway last night I get home and there is a message on my answering machine. It is from her. So I give her a call turns out the aunt of a friend is having an estate/yard sale. The friend tips her off on some of the merchandise that will be offered and it includes 2 "Japanese rifles". She wanted to know if I would be interested in them. I said I might be and ask that when she goes to the sale to look at them and give me a call if she has any questions about them.

So today after work I met up with my sister and she had gone to the garage sale and in the car where the two rifles. WWII era Arisakas. Mums are intact, No BATF etching like you have a new import. Serials numbers match on the rifles, Original slings and two bayonets.

I get to buy them off her when I get paid....  bigthumbsup

Damm who would have thought my sister would have been cool enough to find out about two intact Type 99's on sale and pick them up for me when I couldn't because of my work schedual...

I never realised how cool my sister was until yesterday.

It turns out she is a closet football fan (arsenal). I knew my mum was a fan (actually, one of the biggest footie fans i know, again... Arsenal though), but my sister?!?

Congrats on your new purchase!  Wink

Many of us have known just how "cool" your sister is for quite a while.

Seriously, though, I could kick my grandmother (which would be very macabre at this stage  tombstone  ) for selling a Nazi officer's Luger (I think) with mother-of-pearl grip.

Lucky break for you!

Next time I'm in ANC, I'll have to look her up. I bet she'll stay out later than 1930.  Wink

Wow! I've lived long enough to hear the Arisaka become desirable, be thought of as cool.

I remember when they sold for $9.95 at Ye Olde Western Hunter. So is the Nambu collectible now?

Good to see someone in the family has finally moved out of the house.

I thought, upon reading the heading, that you'd stumbled across your sister's myspace page or something.

You guys are terrible.

Here I am trying to start a nice firearms thread and all you can do is pick on my sister.

Anyway a new development. I went over to vist the local expert on Japanese weapons at the gun store where he works...They had another Arisaka on the shelf.

This one is a very late war one...I picked it up too.

Makes an interesting comparison between those two my sister got, which right now we think where 1920's builds and this 1945 built one.

You can really tell they where taking a lot of short cuts in manufacturing.

Actually, L-188, I've seen quite a few compliments towards your sister!

She must "know" a lot of people.

Actually those with intact mums (the Chrysantemium, the symbol of the Japanese imperial house) are quite rare, since, as with the German Swastika, the Allied troops demanded this symbol to be removed.

Jan

BTW, be carefull when firing the late Arisaka. Most of the late war cheaply made rifles have a reputation of blowing up due to bad substitute materials having been used in making them. They are not considered to be safe.

The first thing you want to do is get those crappy Jap double "A" batteries outta there and put in some good 'ol Ray-O-Vacs'. They may have already leaked inside the battery compartment. If so, some vinegar and baking soda should do the trick.

Can you still get roll caps for those old guns?  biggrin

Ive heard several different version of the story.

Version A: US troops where ordered to remove them from captured arms
Version B: US Troops bringing them home where ordered to remove them to keep them busy on the boat trip home.
Version C: The Japanese removed them to save face
Version D: The Japanese removed them because they where no longer imperial property when surrendured at the end of the war.
Version E: The US ordered the Japanese to remove them after the war as part of the program to "De-imperialize" Japan after the war.

Both of the ones my sister got appear to be pre-war manufacture. I looked up the maunfacturers mark and they both appear to have been made in that arsonal in Manchuria....sorry can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Now the one I bought yesterday when I just happened to go in to talk to the local Arisaka expert (Who doesn't recommend shooting any made later then a 7th generation rifle) he believes was made in July of 45. YOu can deffinately tell that quality control was headed right out the window, and that they had made a lot of changes to simplifly construction and remove metal parts....Damm the buttplate on it is a piece of wood nailed onto the stalk.
