Roller Coaster Derails Near Minneapolis

Mon May 22, 2006 8:01 am

Valleyfair is a theme park in Shakopee, Minnesota, which is just southwest of MSP. The Wild Thing roller coaster broke apart and derailed around 4 PM on Sunday. Seventeen people were transported to hospital. Fortunately, it derailed onto a catwalk next to the track near the end of the ride. If it would have derailed elsewhere on the track things would have been very tragic.

Geez, this is "worst nightmare" stuff.

The only thing that coaxes me onto rides like this is the knowledge that they are safe SAFE SAFE!

Can't wait to see why this happened.

Hmm, what will KDWB do this year then? They usually do a Wild Thing marathon where they fill the train with contestants, who then will ride the thing non-stop (pretty much) until there is only one left. Winner usually gets a car.

Do you say that anytime an airliner crashes as well? Accidents happen. They're part of life.

Yeah, some people give up early, while others will sit there just to be the last one. They usually tempt people to get off as well. Like when there's three people left, they'll give $1500 to whoever gets off the ride. And random prices throughout.

This doesn't mean the parks rides aren't safe at all. It's a freak accident cause by unknown reasons.. Most modern roller coasters have protection against derailing such as a backup lock that prevents the coaster from going anywhere in the event that it somehow becomes derailed.

Glad to hear no one was killed outright - hope those hospitalized recover quickly. Scary stuff, but its not going to keep me from Great America this weekend! We went to Marine World two weeks ago and I fell in love w/ roller coasters all over again!
