Coldest Place You've Ever Been

Tue May 23, 2006 12:03 pm

Since we all know, based on the other thread, who's been hotter tha nthe other person . . .

How about the coldest?

What's the coldest place you've ever been?

Work, this last winter, here's a pic of the weather station in my office:

Temps in F, Wind in MPH.

-35F in Rutland, VT. The news had a warning that morning that you could get frostbite within 15 seconds. I didn't stay out long enough uncovered to find out.

Upstate NY. I have zero desire to head North during the icy clutches of winter just to see what -49F feels like compared to -20F.

My examples seem to pale in comparision to what you guys have posted thus far:
-When I was in Butte, MT about 4 years ago this past March, I woke up one morning and it was 0F. Since I lived most of my life in tropical and subtropical climates, that was freaking cold for me. My poor car was barely able to start.

-This past winter when I visited Milwaukee, it was -3F one morning.

I remember I was in Deadwood, SD one time in January, where the temperature was ridiculously low, to the point that water froze as you throw it in the air. I never figured out exactly how low it got, though.

Also hit some nasty cold spells in the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid NY area.

Any time I ever say I'm cold around my grandfather, though, he tells me stories about the years he lived up in Alaska, working for Exxon.  cold

Long Island can can get pretty cold in the winter. But I have been upstate New York in winter where the temperature can get down to the single digits on a regular basis.

I'm a Texan, so I start shiverin' around 50*F. However, on spring break I went to Colorado, and it got down to 3*F in the morning. It was a little chilly....

Bozeman, MT February '88. During the 2 week Siberian cold front that plunged much of the U.S. below 0°F it reached -53°F one night. It was crazy. One morning it was about 45°F with a Chinook wind and people running around in shorts. Then a few hours later it was -30°F and we didn't get above 0 for over 2 weeks. Fastest and largest climate change I've ever experienced.

A few winters ago here in Whitehorse it hit -48°C and stayed in that area for over a week. I remember walking to the bus stop a few times in that... good times eh. Trick is keep going and dont even consider taking your mind off that nice heater in the bus. Atleast it's a dry cold so you it doesn't feel that bad, because my experience is a wet -2 feels roughly the same as a dry -10. Was down in the -40s a few times when I was living in Yellowknife as well.

Gotta love the north...

Well as an African resident we don't see real cold but my lowest temperature was -17C in Rochester, MN in January 2002. Helsinki in March this year came close at -14C.

Bodø, Norway. During the winter storms, the temperature was only between -10 to -15 degrees C. But with the winds we effectivly had closer to -40C.

Even a short trip from building to building in the military base required layers of thick clothing. All that was exposed were the eyes, and it was freezing like hell. (A bit of a paradox that sentence)

Ah, those were the days...  Smile

The coldest I've been is right here in Fairbanks, Alaska. Last winter, I walked a mile to work (as I do everyday) when it was -54F. That week, we didn't see temps above -40F.

I live in the south, and cold weather is just to visit. Went hunting in Wisconsin in 2002, and it was cold as a, well a witch's tit...

Nothing as cold as what other post show, but to me it was freezing...

I experienced around -25C in southern bolivia/northern Chile, if you add the blizzard that was blowing, windchill must have been -35C or lower.

I also got stuck on a ski lift in Stowe, and although -15C might not sound that cold, when you're stuck in a chair, swinging 5-10m over the ground, not able to move an awfull lot, you quickly get very very cold!!

I don't really know but I think it was Aspen, Saas Fee, Ischgl, or some other ski resort I have been, the funny thing is that I didn't notice that it was that cold because I had pretty warm clothes and I was skiing all the time which kept me warm. Memorable is also some weekend in New York in January 2004.

I think it hit something like -30F one night in Grand Forks this winter. At which point, my buddies and I boiled a pot of water and threw it up in the air outside... it turned into snow. IMO, once you go below 0F or the windchill in below -10F, it all feels the same... like crap.
