The things that people spend money on for their cars...

Can anyone cite the origin of "bling bling" in American popular culture without using Wikipedia? If you'd been aware of it at its emergence, you'd have never seen it coming!

It seems that we have no limit to the number of tacky bits that can be glued onto a car.

I think it's funny that someone is going to spend $1,000 for an exhaust and then install this part that increases backpressure.

I never thought I'd agree with you on anything Cfalk, but on this, we are eye-to-eye. Big grin

That's the interesting thing. When I was a kid in High School, the last thing we wanted was a flashy car that didn't perform well. In fact, we were looking for Q-Ships.

For those of you who don't know, Q-Ships were ships used in WWI and WWII. They looked like normal merchant ships, but had masses of hidden guns, depth charges and torbedo launchers. Their purpose was to lure enemy submarines by presenting an apparently easy target, and then blowing him away.

The ideal car for the poor high school student was therefore a rusted out junker, which hid a suped-up engine, rock-crusher manual transmission, tricked out differential and suspension tuning. Surprise the hell out of the driver of a Porsche or Corvette who pulls up next to you at the light.

Now it's the opposite. People put all their money one shiny stuff, video screens inside the car, etc. All it does is weigh down the car with useless stuff. It's a Q-ship in reverse.

rock-crusher manual transmission,

I had a manual but what does rock-crusher mean?

Quoting Cfalk (Reply 4):
tricked out differential

not an issue when your car is FWD and can't break the tires loose!

Quoting Cfalk (Reply 4):
suspension tuning

Each corner of my high school car was "independently tuned" (i.e. - shod with a unique tire).

This is prompting me to start a new thread about the tackiest car accessories.

What's wrong with just drilling holes in the silencer like we used to do in the days of B$W TV??????

"Rock-Crusher" was a nickname given to the classic Muncie M22 4-speed manual that was installed in some of the great muscle cars of the 60s and early 70s. They were not very sophisticated, noisy, and shifting gears needed a hammer, but they were rugged and worked, and could withstand just about whatever power you could give it.

Hell, we'd just remove the silencer altogether and replace them with glass packs. Or you installed a cut-out - a valve which would open the exhaust right after the headers. Illegal as hell, but as long as you kept your eyes out for the cops and did not use it too much, you could get away with it.

I saw some tool the other day driving around in bogan bling car. Had a crappy home made spoiler. Tail pipes were cut off at the rear muffler to give it that V8 sound.

Quite sad in my opinion.

This stuff is for red necks and lough ghriders. I have a friend who is real OG from LA. He is not a man that I would mess with, and he has always been into the lowrider scene. However, even I was suprised when he was disgusted by spinners. This is even though he would always keep on top of new rims. Just goes to show you that even gangstars know what has no taste.d

Fumanchewed; no self-respecting redneck would be caught dead even looking at this crap, at least not here in middle Tennessee. Dress-up items include true dual exhausts, artful renditions of the rebel flag (some very nicely executed, I might add) plus Dale and Dale Jr. stickers and front license plates.
Those with wheel spinners and other distasteful exhibitions of poor financial planning are either usually of Mexican heritage, too young to have a red neck because they haven't yet experienced outside work or transplants from other areas of the country.

In reference to the above-pictured low-taste bling, even I didn't see this coming although there is precedent...occassionally I see a trailer hitch cover with a free spinning propeller blade. I've yet to ask an owner if he is advertising his envolvement in bass-masters competition or flies a spam can.

Cfalk; we must have been interested in similar things in our earlier years. I had a 409/409 Impala SS (when SS meant something) that used to eat the Borg Warner T10s. The Muncie was du jour, but I sold the car before a retrofit.

Our cutouts were "poor man's lake pipes"...we welded matching size pieces of plumbing pipe into the header pipes on each side and simply corked them with a threaded cap (plumbing nipple). Easy-on, easy-off for those impromptu midnight drag races. BTW, this type of cutout was standard factory equipment on the early/mid sixties Plymouth (Super Stock) and Dodge (Ram Charger) models with the 413 and later 426 CID engines. As you say, illegal as hell in (in most states), but Chrysler got around the law by having four bolts plus a tack-weld holding on the plug from the factory. Regards...jack

Hey, I was just wanting "reliable transportation" on account of having to pay for it, and insurance, myself!

These little tuner wankers today are so out of touch, it's incredible. Spinners on exhaust pipes. Honestly.

Damn, I'm starting to feel old. You know you are old when a car you used to think of as new, or even a clunker, is now considered a rare classic worth 6 figures.

Who woulda thought? When I was in high school a '57 Chevy or '64-'65 Mustang went for less than a grand.

Shit like this basically encapsulates everything that's wrong with my generation. I'm 23 and most people my age and under are obsessed with image and perceived wealth, it's ridiculous! The easy thing is to balme pop culture but I think it's just that we're lazy as a generation and we have not been in a position where we've been pusehd that hard, that duty was left to our parents.

I work (reasonably) hard and I get paid very well for what I do but if I look around, people my age do not have the same ambition. They would rather buy a shit car and make it look nice than run nice, which is just stupid.

We need to wake up and get back to work. Modelling our own existence on that of say 50 Cent is ridiculous because he doesn't own that Jet, that Maserati is going back to the rental office after the video shoot is done and all those "btiches" are only there for a couple hours.

Sheesh, I still think a clothes pin and a playing card in the spokes of the back wheel of a bike with a banana seat is cool.

I didn't need a muffler "kit" in h.s., my car sounded like crap anyway and it didn't need to be lowered or get "ground effects" because it was a Honda stationwagon and had a bum suspension. But I can honestly say that I took pride in my Beast, because now I have money to pay off my student loans before I'm 50  Silly

I gotta wonder why people spend thousands on economy cars. I respect cars like the Civic for their engineering quality and reliability, but when I see them all riced out with a giant wing on the back (mind you it's front wheel drive, so that's pointless) I typically just flick them off and pass them making the "pbbbbt" fart noise of their muffler with my tounge. If you're spending that much money why not just get a better car that can actually race? Hell I beat 90% of these ricers off the line and I drive a Jeep. (Not like I care, anyway.)

Excellent post- keep your eyes on the prize and don't be distracted by the noise out there. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to be part of that generation. Keep the faith!
