Is Someone Stealing My Internet?

Thu May 25, 2006 8:00 am

I have a wireless router. I have a cable going from the router to my desktop, and I use the wireless for my laptop. Right now, my laptop is off, but the activity light for the wireless network is going crazy. It has a 64-bit encrypted password. I have an access log, but I don't know how to interpret the IP addresses.

Thanks,
BAB

No, no, no. That's crazy talk. You're internet is fine. But if you get the chance, think you could upgrade to a T3 line?

Well, the blinking wireless activity light doesn't mean anything. It should always be on. If you check your logs, there should (IIRC) only be one IP address: yours. If your wireless password is working properly, there shouldn't be anybody on your network. There may be a tech-savvy teenager hogging your bandwidth, but even the weakest encryption manages to keep out your average joe.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, as Nighthawk and Gordonsmall should be on this thread in short order.  Wink

Hmmm,  scratchchin  could be!

Thanks, AC.

I have an incoming and an outgoing log. The incoming shows tons of different IP's, and the outgoing shows only mine. Of course, that is all gibberish to me.

Umm...once upon a time when I first got a wireless laptop, I turned it on and it automatically connected to the neighbors wireless, without any set up, security walls etc- (Bare in mind living in an apartment) ...and it actaully "let" me surf the net with it..I stopped it of course, but it soon put me off the idea of getting wireless for my self around here!!

(I can still access two networks of my various neighbors that are "unprotected" without even trying, hence I need to make sure my wireless is always disabled to avoid stumbling into someone elses connection!)

Try one of these resources:

http://www.webyield.net/domainquery.html

Using your log, enter IP addresses and find out who is also using your router.

Here's a thread from another website, in which, the poster experienced the same thing as you.

If it's WEP encryption then it can be breached:

Quote:
At a recent ISSA (Information Systems Security Association) meeting in Los Angeles, a team of FBI agents demonstrated current WEP-cracking techniques and broke a 128 bit WEP key in about three minutes.

Use WPA instead.

Honestly, they were handed to him quite ceremoniously by ANC whilst attached to a cheap piece of day-glo green cardboard right in front of Shea's in LAS. To the best of my memory, ANC did not violate his nether regions that weekend, but, of course, I wasn't with them both the whole time.

If the outgoing shows only your IP address, then noone is stealing your connection. You mentioned you had encryption turned on, which will make it very difficult for anyone to use the connection. Sure its possible to crack it, but only the pros will be able to do so.

Your incoming log shows different IPs, this is what is causing the light to flash. The internet is full of worms, which search random IPs looking for machines to infect. Even though your machines are turned off, the router is still connected to the net. The activity is just various worms finding your IP and searching to see if there is a machine there to infect. It might also be hackers scanning IPs looking for machines to hack.

In such a case there is nothing you can do really, as long as your machines have spyware/virus checkers and are properly patched and firewalled, you will be safe from the hackers and viruses.

If you only see your adress on outgoing logs AND you have a firewall to block unsollicited incoming traffic then probably nobody is stealing your net.
What you have to do then is check for spyware and viruses on your PC, they can hog your bandwidth. I have seen some viruses cause so much activity that the router will freeze half a minute after being turned on.

If your really paranoid like I am, you could just turn off the wireless when your not using it. If your computer is off, why not turn the router off as well?

My laptop uses the wireless signal, but my desktop plugs straight into the router, so, by turning it off I would lose my desktop connection. And, yes DWC, I am paranoid like you Big grin

(1) Turn off your SSID broadcasting. If they don't know your networks 'name' then can't get on.
(2) Turn ON WPA encryption.
(3) Turn ON Mac Filtering (No, this isn't filtering Apple products!) A MAC address is like a unique serial number for each computer hardware piece. This requires a little setup.. but well worth it.. By turning on Mac filtering, it only allows those wired and wireless cards that you specify to even connect to your network in its most basic ways. Only drawback here is if you have friends over with their wireless, you need to add their Mac to the allowable list.
(4) Oh yea.. change your routers username and password.

You do those 4 things, you *will not* be hacked wirelessly.
