Digital Trunked Scanners

Fri May 26, 2006 5:02 am

So I currently have just a basic analog trunked scanner that I use a lot, but I have been looking at possible getting a digital scanner, and selling the one I have, especially with talk that the NJSP will be switching to digital over the summer. Any experienced users out there have any advice on a model to get, or any good deals?

I own both Uniden and GRE (RadioShack) models.

Feature wise (for scanners CURRENTLY available) I like the Uniden BC796D the best. But if you are just monitoring digital, I think the PRO-96/2096 series is the best choice due to its superb audio quality on P25 digital transmissions.

Uniden is releasing a new model the BCD996T which looks to be an awesome scanner. I know I'll be picking one of these up for sure. Based on what it does it would be my first choice when picking a digital scanner.

Here is a pic of it... it should be available in a few weeks.

A handheld model with similar features is the BC396T (already available).

This is one of the ones I was looking at, only downside is the cost.

I guess my decision will come down to how much money I save over the summer. Thanks for your input.  Smile

I have one of the hand held models by Radio Shack. It was quite amusing being able to listen to the airplanes, and to the airport police after someone had called me in.  Sad

Just a hypothetical situation: Say one was to hear a party of someone they know come over the scanner about to be broken up. If said person were to call the party in question and warn them, would that be against the law? Not that I would ever do this.  scratchchin

I have not heard otherwise. What would be the difference between that and saying, "Hey, a bunch of cops passed me headed your way"? I imagine it's all about the listening laws. They are all so different from state to state.

In my area, they are illegal if used during commission of a crime, but legal otherwise.

So are these digital ones able to pick up the transmissions of all the police departments that got DHS grants to upgrade their communications to digital.

Still my trusty Radio Shack Pro-79 seems to do allright still.

They can pick up un-encrypted P25 digital which is usually found on Motorola trunked systems or conventional/single frequencies (like LAPD).

If you want to hear ProVoice or OpenSky your out of luck when it comes to scanners. You can get an LPE-200 to do ProVoice but it's going to cost some $$$

Some agencys are running fulltime encryption such as Orange County, CA and Jacksonville, FL...and others just encrypt sensitive channels such as CID, Narcotics, SWAT, etc. If that is the case you're out of luck.
