A.net Meet At 78° North (Svalbard, NO) In August

Mon May 29, 2006 2:01 am

Ok, this is really crazy. For some reason I woke up this morning with an unexplainable urge to visit Svalbard (Spitsbergen), and now I'm almost ready to book. I did some online research and it seems that it is a very interesting but extreme place. For close to 100% of A.netters this would be the northernmost place they've ever been. (Not counting polar flights!)

So anyway. There is not a single shot at LYR in the A.net database, even though this airport sees at least 3 scheduled flights a day (2x SAS, 1x West Air Sweden). So I thought, why not go there with 2 or 3 A.netters, check out the place for a coupe of days, shoot our pictures, and enjoy the polar day (nope, sun doesn't ever go down at all).

Anybody in? This is NOT a joke, I'm dead serious. Fares are as low as 279 Eur round trip out of OSL, and getting there should be no problem either. For example, I just found 140 Eur round trip from FRA using KLM City Hopper.

Dates: August 6 (Sun) - August 10 (Thu)

We'd all book together to avoid the price going up after 2 bookings.

I'm really serious about this. I do think we could assemble a group of 4 or 5.

Here are some web sites:

University of Svalbard: http://www.unis.no/
City of Longyearbyen: http://www.longyearbyen.net/
Svalbard Tourist Info: http://www.svalbard.com/

Greetings!

Great idea! I might even concider it as I have enough bonus points for a free European flight.

Just the other morning I was looking at my world map in my room and noticed an Island called Spitsbergen, looked it up and it does look a great place, I'd love to visit Greenland also, that would be fantastic!

Now, that sounds like a REAL adventure Soren! LOL!! I wish I could go, it would be good. But, unless Mr Lotto decides I'm his long lost son, then I'll have to miss out on this one.

Be interesting to see if BMIFlyer turns up - he seems to go everywhere else! Big grin

However, my roster indicates I only have the 10th of august off during the meet, so maybe I'll miss out on this one, lol.

Some other time maybe  Wink

It looks a great place, and do-able quite easily from NE England, but I'll be in warmer climes (PMI) that week.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought that I'd actually find some people crazy enough to consider coming! Just take your time making up your mind, no hurry here. Maybe some of your non A.net friends want to come along? This one is even safe for girlfriends/wives, as the nature/adventure part should outweigh the plane/spotting part  Smile

Well, as you see OSL is quite accessible and not too expensive. As long as we book the Arctic segment as a group, we should be able to get a good deal too. (You know how sometimes the price goes up after 2 or 3 people buy seperately)

For all who are still in doubt about this: Just do it! When was the last time you've done something really really crazy? You're not really going bankrupt here, that fare is actually a pretty sweet deal at the moment. Heck, Patrick spends more  dollarsign  buying grass during these 4 days than we pay for the flights!

Let's leave Iceland far far south!  cold

Same problem that I have. I am able to get the flight ticket for free using my bonus points, but the way it is now, I wont be able to pay for a place to sleep, so I will have to earn some money in a hurry

Well they have some "Guest Houses" there which must be like hostels, and I'm sure they are a good deal. We could sleep in tents too, in case the weather is ok. There is a campground in town, here is the web site:
http://www.longyearbyen-camping.com/index_start.php?lang=en

A night on the campground is 80 NOK (US$13 or 10EUR or 7 GBP), that should be ok for us!

Hi Soren,

great and crazy idea. I just starred this topic and keep reading it. I like such crazy ideas and I think it would be worth spending the money. The mentioned dates (Aug. 6 - Aug. 10) are still fine with me so if a group is forming there is a good chance that I am part of it. And maybe we could even fly together from ZRH to OSL?

I'm Booked! I'm Booked!

No turning back now for me now! I'm going!!!

And the deal I got into OSL on Lufthansa was a steal: 139 Euro round trip FRA-OSL including all taxes and fees! WOW!

The Svalbard portion of my trip cost me 281 Euro, and I have a 5 hour stop at Tromso to check out the place (I'll contact Cedars747 in a moment, maybe I can meet him there for a couple of hours)

Also, I booked in a way that I arrive at OSL on Saturday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon, so I have 1 night and 1 day in Oslo.

Here are my flights:

FRA-OSL AUG05 2120-2310 on LH 3136
OSL-TOS AUG06 1625-1810 on SK4424
TOS-LYR AUG06 2350-0125* on SK 4492 (op by Braathens)

LYR-TOS AUG10 0505-0640 on SK4493 (op by Braathens)
TOS-OSL AUG10 0830-1020 on SK4409
OSL-FRA AUG10 1305-1505 on LH 3131

I'm so excited! What an adventure!

I wonder how popular i'm gonna get now  Smile. First Farnborough 21-23. July. Then the ZRH-meet 28-30. July. Then possible LYR 6-10 august. Finishing of with 3 weeks vacation at the end of August/beginning of September (haven't booked anything yet).

Ha! You are coming in an hour before me! Which means you have an hour to set up the tent... hahaha!

Actually, that means that you can take pictures of my plane landing. The campground is right next to the runway. This might be your first photo that's shot at 1:30 AM... and in plain daylight!

Exactly!!! Big grin And I am going to try and take pictures of your plane coming in! I hope my camera will be fixed before I am going... it is being repaired right now but it takes a looong time. I delivered to the camera shop 3 weeks ago and they still haven't heard from the place they send the camera to.

I suggest you book the 2 parts seperately. Try www.scandinavian.net and do the OSL-LYR part, and it will give you a price of around 192 GBP. Then you can separately purchase a flight into OSL, which should not be expensive. Give me your departure city and I'll check out the options.

Cosec59, I have replied your PM but today the whole PM system is screwed up for some reason.

I found you a 100 GBP fare out of LHR into OSL using the UK British Airways site. It would be cool if you could take the early OSL-TOS flight (see above) so we can spend the 5 hours at Tromso together.

It's actually required to have a gun if you leave city limits. Polar bears are protected, however, so you can only shoot in self defense.

You might also wanna check out www.wideroe.no. WF is owned by SK and sell tickets to the same flights. The prices is not exactly the same, so you might save a few pounds. I just checked, and Birdwatching's flight was about 10£ cheaper on WF than on SK. It might not be a fortune, but hey anything helps.

Nah, we'll just pick a "volunteer" we can feed the bears with.

Not to mention that WF is simply an Amadeus interface, meaning it'll listed the cheapest options regardless of carrier (at least to OSL as there aren't many options from there)
