Have You Had ...

Mon May 29, 2006 6:28 pm

Have you had a Shawarma, or a Gyro, or a Donner? or all of them? Which one o you think is better?

Personally i have had a Shawarma and a donner and shawarma beats the donner by a mile?

Your views?

Yeah i prefer shawarma because there's more meat and less bread in it. They have to be making it good though, sometimes the meat is too dry.
Anyways I'm avoiding these lately, too much fat and I want to loose weight.

Oddly enough I have, many times.

Proper Greek Souvlaki do it for me, yum!!! There is a good place in CHC.

Never had a donner sober though and in Pakuranga there is a sign over a takeaway saying:

"Doner Kebab"....now you know where them body parts go!!!

NOTHING beats a good lamb Souvlaki with garlic sauce! Lots of places here in Melbourne that do great Souvlaki's (Largest Greek population outside of Greece!)

I like Gryo's. They aren't as fatty or greasy as a donner but still, I'll not complain after a few pints if I'm given one!

Had one many moons ago in YOW. I was pleasantly surprised as the taste of the "unit" was very good.

Try searching it on google. Its pieces of meat rolled in flat bread with a sauce and a pickle, and sometimes, the odd french fries. Talking about it makes me drool!!

Shawarma is by far the most common of the three here, I have seen gyro advertised but never "doner kebap" (as it seems to be called on every street corner in Germany!)

Just up the road from me you can get a breakfast shawarma, the pita bread has bacon and eggs in it!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I'm not talking about the kebabs from the local high street. I am talking of the original kebab called a shawarma, the ones you get in Dubai, and most Mid Eastern food outlets, huge towering kebabs, and the actual sandwich is rolled in a pita bread, with garlic sauce or hummus, pickles or salad and sometimes fries.

Tastes much better than what you get in your local high street.

Shawarma is very common in Israel. It is sold usually in Falafel stands. You have it with all different kinds of spreads (like Hummus and Tahini) and several kinds of salads. It's really good.

Yeah Victoria Yeeros in Marrickville in Sydney does great souvlaki! So cheap too, especially compared to the UK.
