Ahmadinejad Will Not Attend The World Cup

Tue May 30, 2006 5:55 am

Well, apparently Mahmoud will not go to the World Cup after all. Just read in an Article on Focus Online that he has decided not to go, according to one of his officials. His non-attendance at the World Cup has given the World Cup Organisers and German politicians a very big sigh of relief, though previously, "Der Spiegel" reported that a visit by Ahmadinejad to Germany was still tentative.

I'm glad that man isn't coming to Germany.

Would have been perfect for Bush etc, no need for a war in Iran etc.

Glad to hear it...It would have been a mess for the Germans if he went.

Are you serious? The best possible outcome for the entire world would be if the Iranian regime collapses without Western intervention...Nobody wants to militarily confront Iran so if the regime collapsed it wouldn't be necessary.

But a sniper killing the Iranian President would be kind of a western intervention, since it would have shown that Germany's security would have been unable to protect him.
And you don't really believe the assasination of Achmadinejad would end Iran's enrichment program?

True, but do you really believe that if he were murdered in Germany it wouldn't be interpreted as the West killing him? No matter what, the ayatollah in Iran would blame all the western governments. And no one knows how things would precipitate afterwards, but most likely they will get worse, since Ahmadinejad is only the spokesman for the people holding the real power in Iran.

Well, if one 16-year old drunk can stab 31 people at a public event, despite all security, people probably wouldn't even ask how a professional assasin with excellent camouflage skills located a few hundred yards away in an abandoned building manages to put one single bullet into a single person's head  Wink .

It isn't guaranteed to end it, but I think that if the pot were stirred the situation would be better than it is today. Shake up the regime and anything can happen...Anything is better than sitting idle while Iran races to complete its nuclear weapons program, as it is doing today.

While I'm all for Iran ending their nuclear programme and Ahmadinejad disappearing in any way, I think the last thing we need is yet another war. I prefer major sabotage of the programme over a pre-emptive strike in these days, given that some days, I think we're at the brink of World War III.

Nobody wants another war. That is why I said the best outcome would be if the regime collapsed before it came to war. But one way or the other, I don't think the United States will alow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons...

Hopefully such sabotage is already in the works and we just don't know about it. And sabotage doesn't have to be of the phsyical plants--Anything that makes the regime internally weaker is a step in the right direction. That being said, the Israelis tried sabotaging the parts as they left Europe in the early 80s before resorting to a surgical strike against Iraq's plant.

What security? I was there and there was hardly any security, which didn't come as surprise, since it's impossible to provide security under those circumstances.

absolutely. To put it in the words of Harry Truman "and most of us would never see a peaceful world again" .

"security" is usually provided for "threatened persons" like Mrs Merkel and other VIPs. Few people expect a 16year-old to run amok in a new rail-station

WHO exactly should do so ? Mrs Merkel ? Mr Trappatoni ? Thomas Gottschalk ? or the US-ambassador to Germany ?

had he arrived, he would have been a state-guest on an inofficial visit. The German security forces would have had no chance than to try to guard him as well as possible. All in all, it is rather fortunate that he in the end decided against going to Germany.

The city of Nuremberg, where Iran plays, was extremely worried about the prospects of having the iranian president appearing during one of the games.
Nuremberg was associated with third-reich propaganda events and the least thing they wanted ,was a madman questioning the existance of gas-chambers...
I do wish the team of Iran though ,a successful world-cup participation...
Maybe if they make it to the final,he will come to Berlin....  crazy

Last time an Iranian head of State visited Berlin when a great coalition was in the German government, we got the biggest unrest we ever had (the Shah visit in 1968)...

So, Mr. Achmadinejad: Stay away from our state, we don't want your kind here!
