Your First Cellphone?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:17 am

Inspired by this thread: How Many Cellphones In Your House? (by Jafa39 May 31 2006 in Non Aviation) (which was in turn inspired by another thread  Silly), I was wondering, what was your first-ever cellphone?

Mine was a Nokia 5170, back in 2001.

It was the most popular phone at the time, everyone seemed to have one!  crazy  Mine had a pink cover (figures...). The phone lasted about 6 months before it was stolen  mad . My next phone was another 5170, with the standard black cover; that one is still sitting somewhere in my bedroom.

So, how about yours?

Mine was a: NEC DB1000

It used to belong to my Mum, I think it is still some where in my room, under a pile of junk probably.

I had a very heavy and very big Motorola phone, sorry but I can't remember the exact model, it was in 1996 or 1997 and T-Mobile was called D1-Telekom back then.

My first phone was like Carmen's, except I had the standard cover on it. It was with the carrier that eventually became T-Mobile in the U.S.: VoiceStream.

Nokia 6120 TDMA

Bought on December 1999.

In 2002 I took it to a shop to get its software upgraded to 6120i standard, so that I could send SMS.

I stopped using it on December 2004 when I got myself a new Nokia 3105.

I had two, one similar to the one Garri767 shows in her reply and another, with more range and a better signal in a damn suitcase looking contraption! What a pain that was . . .

That was in 1991.

I had a sony, about the size of a kit-kat with an extendable mouthpiece like a bee's leg that swung down when you wanted to talk.

Dunno what model it was.

My first phone to call my own was...um...I know it was a Nokia with a greyscale screen...uhh, that's about it, lol.

The first cell phone I owned was one of these beauties. I swear, something like 70% of the mass was take up by the battery. It was enormous!

The one thing I do remember from back then was lusting over the newly released StarTAC. I've no idea why, but no phone since then has been able to capture my affection quite like that one.  drool

My first phone was a motorola flip phone with that really big battery. Got it in March 1995.
My next phone in about 1999 was a Nokia 5110; similar to the Nokia 5170. Nokia really hit the big time with that 5100 shape; seems like everyone in Australia owned a Nokia and probably the rest of the world.

Nokia 232, last analogue phone that Nokia sold in the UK.

I remember when I switched to a digital phone, how amazed I was that I could see who was calling before I answered the phone.

Indeed. I was 17, in my last year of high school, when I got my first phone. At that time, cellphones in school were still a novelty, and almost no one had one. Of course, I didn't use it in class; I used it only to call my dad when school was over, to let him know I was on my way home.

Now, only 5 years later, my 10-year-old sister who is in 4th grade keeps telling my parents that she would like a phone of her own, since all of her classmates have one (and they even have better models than I do!). Fortunately, my parents are not willing to yield.  Smile

This is my first one - The Nokia 101. I still have the phone, box, charger instructions and everything back at my folk's place.

I've also have an Ericsson GH*** with the box and everything too. Mine was the one that has the green band around the aerial, but I swapped this with one of my mates Blue band - 2 of them both had identical phones, and mine was slightly different. So I swapped so they could identify their phones easier in the pub !!.

I then had one of those Phillips crap things (first one in FlyKev's Pic) that I never actually used.

I then had a Nokia 5110 with a silver cover, this got stolen so I replaced it with a Nokia 3210. I wanted a new phone and couldn't afford one, so I shoved a metal skewer into the screen and broke it so I could get a new one off my insurance, they didn't do the 3210 anymore, so they gave me a Nokia like the dark Blue one in FlyKev's pic, but I then got a red cover for it.

I then traded that in for a Sony Ericsson T610, which I still use as my back up holiday phone, and now I currently this :-

A Nokia 6230.

I am hoping to upgrade it soon, but I can't be @r$ed with the hassle of changing contracts and I can only get a really cr@p phone as a free upgrade.

Kinda in a bind, because my company is a huge service provider to Sprint and Nextel and I get 20% off on everything. Just dont know how the customers feel about them. I have been with Cingular for 11 years, and they just dont give a crap anymore.

We are looking at T-Mobile, and they have a hell of a spokesperson too, but 20% is a big number.

The first phone I had was huge brick of a thing (Omni) back in 1993. Handy to have in the car, but too big to carry around, unless you had a bag! Being analogue, it was very, very basic, no choice of tones, or vibration feature, & it was around anouther 7 years before camera phones came out. Also reasonably expensive for the time ($300) Since then I've had either Motorolas or Nokia's, also had an Ericsson GH for a while as well.

Current phone is a Motorola V3 (free with continuation of contract)
