Anyone Own A Mercedes 300SD?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:04 pm

So the search for a beater for Tunisia continues.
Today's candidate is a 1984 US-import Mercedes 300SD that I have sourced in Eire for just over 1K Euro.

Has anyone owned such a vehicle ?

My first car!! Ah the memories.

These are tanks. They're loud, and not the smoothest ride in the world. But with regular servicing they'll go on and on and on and on.

It would seem that from the price of that one, it would have VERY high mileage. Then again, I think cars in the United States are pretty cheap, right?

Well the odometer reads 106k miles which the owner swears is genuine.
Car is a LHD US import on UK plates which the owner is attempting to flog in Ireland, where diesel is more expensive than gas.

That may explain a little. Btw have put up the 406 and Clio for sale for more I bought them for Big grin

Yes if UTA insists on getting it he must wear the appropriate outfit. Plasticky leather jacket that has never been near an animal, large amounts of fake gold jewellery and a bad taste fake Versace shirt  Wink

Unfortunately with technology advancing so quickly in the last years, the price of old cars has dropped amazingly, too much for you to enjoy them, when others are actually pimping around in them.

Cars that I dreamt of when I was 15, can be bought today in packs of 6.. these includes:

But it's still a "why-not" buy, these cars are classics.

Problem with all those cars is that they can be horrendously expensive to keep. A 20 year old Porsche or Benz requires a lot of care and feeding, much more so than your 20 year old Toyota or Chevy. Which explains why their values have plumeted like rocks. Even if it is a Mercedes, it is still an old car with old car issues.

W126 Benzes seem to hold up well... though I am not a fan of the styling. I think the W124 (E-class) and W201 (190E) were the better looking Benzes of the 80s.

But there is something about old diesel Benzes, they seem to soilder on in all sorts of environments with seemingly less than loving care. And it would probably fit in well in the streets of Tunis.

Diesels are built sturdier, hig compression ratio and vibration, because of which they do last long.
