The Official A.net Car Enthusiast Thread!

Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:41 pm

So it appears whenever there's a car-related thread the usual suspects always crop up :

Gordonsmall
Cornish
AirPacific747

Any other car nuts here so we can discuss the advantages/disadvantages of inline vs. straight vs. V vs. rotary ? Big grin

Do station wagons count?

I am very nostalgic for the real station wagons--those we used to have in the USA and those that are still popular in Europe.

I'm always interested in the car threads, though my internet connection often enough chokes on the pic-heavy threads  Sad . But anyway, I love cars, I love driving on the Autobahn, and driving cars is also part of my job. Though I'm still looking for a job that consists of driving large limousines or sports car throughout Germany Big grin .

The Supercharged version of the HSE is not that fast, the the Sport is a bit lower to the ground and even the Supercharged sport version is not that fast. The Supercharged sport version is a three tenths of a second faster than my V8 Touareg in 0-100km/h and the HSE Supercharged is in the around 8s I think. So really its not that fast. I travel in my SUV in speeds over 100mph but I have a German made car and German cars travel at high speeds with much ease. I not sure how a British Rover would handle but I sure it cant be to bad. If you test drove a super charged version and than a normal version you would see why people spend the extra money for the extra power  Smile

Yeah why not

I saw an episode of Top Gear a few days ago where Jeremy Clarkson tests the CL65 AMG I think it is, and they test it against the Bentley Continental GT and the Aston Martin DB9, and the CL65 AMG is waaay faster! I think the program is over a year old. I guess the SL65 AMG is even faster as the car is lighter! At the time he tested the car, it was the fastest street racer in the world.

Well, I am perfectly satisfied with my new ride that I got a month ago:

I do like the Mercedes brand, but the last car I had from them was a "federal disaster area" as far as quality is concerned and the only feedback I got from the importer here in Switzerland was "this is state of the art".

Well, thank you very much, but I definitely dont pay premium prices for a build quality and reliability that is poorer than that of a KIA or Hyundai.

True the 4.2 is the same engine my Volkswagen Touareg V8 uses except the A8 has 335hp and I only have 310hp I would love the extra powe. But an A8 4.2 would still take a 3series BMW with ease. But the W12 A8! That is one of my dream cars! That is one amazing machine!

Italian cars and the French Hot Hatches are my passion in terms of cars. Drove a 156 2.0 Selespeed which was beautiful and good to drive, but the Clio Sport I drive now is something else. It is such a flowing and exciting car to drive hard (and the car craves revs, so that's all the time)

Quoting Jafa39 (Reply 40):

Taste is something that is mutually exclusive from a Yank Tank. German cars are boring and soulless, but Italian cars have both personality & taste. They are an experience just to drive, and will turn heads even in much more prestigious company. The red 156 Selespeed with twin sport exhaust I used to drive had the ultimate street headturning cred. It looks far more expensive than it was.

But seeing as you asked.

I don't like and have never liked Ferraris, I didn't much care for early Italian motorcycles either.

I like what i like, I know its hard for some people (not just you) to believe that a person can appreciate fine cars but not follow the German/Italian herd but there you go, I have never been to Ibiza or read a Harry Potter book either...and i love those old funky SAAB 2-strokes!!  Smile

I drive an '04 pewter SL500 with AMG trim, which is a really gorgeous car. However, living in NYC, the garage attendant gets to use it more than I do. And when I do get to drive it, it's frustrating to drive at 8 mph, which is the average speed of traffic in Manhattan.

The car is an expensive mid-life indulgence, and I feel quite guilty about it when so many still struggle for their daily bread. But economists say that the spending money actually helps others prosper, so we shouldn't feel bad about it. The reality is that the monthly payments could easily support a hundred children in sub-saharan climes, but we're getting off-topic here...

Quoting FlyMIA (Reply 24):
I love all German cars except for the X5 and X3 I hate those two "wannabe SUVs"

Please tell me thats just a bad joke. I'm not a big fan of BMW, but the X5 is one of the most amazing SUVs ever! The X3, on the other hand - that just sucks.

These are my favourite cars:

SUVs:

VW Touareg

Range Rover Vogue

Nissan Patrol

Saloons:

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Coupes:

VW GTi

BMW M6

Sport:

Porsche Cayman S
