Deposit On Red Bull Cans In Germany - Huh?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:44 pm

Earlier today I bought a pack of smokes at a kiosk and since I felt a bit tired I decided to get a can of Red Bull as well. The kiosk dude asked me if I want Red Bull with or without sugar, and he added that I have to pay 0,25 EUR deposit for regualar Red Bull cans while Red Bull sugarfree cans are sold without deposit. I asked him why I have to pay deposit for Red Bull with sugar but no deposit for Red Bull sugarfree but he didn't know.

Can anyone explain this completely stupid rule? It doesn't make sense at all.

I got almost the same reply from the kiosk dude (a Turk) when I asked him about the rule, he said: "Because Germany is full of bureaucrats who have nothing better to do than introducing such moronic rules". I agreed with him, took my Red Bull sugarfree can and walked away.

Maybe that guy was just trying to rip you off? I'd imagine that would be big news if they did put deposits on cans!

They put deposit on cans, but I thought on all cans, why is Red Bull sugarfree an exception?

Quoting Daleaholic (Reply 3):

No, he showed me both cans, the sugarfree can had a "Pfandfrei" (no deposit) writing on it while the regular can had the deposit sign printed on it.

Maybe its a tax on sugary drinks to encourage people to buy sugar free...? Sounds like the kind of thing the english government would do...

Oh well, at least we've got Red Bull in Germany... I almost had to live 3 days without a single can during the CPH meet because it's illegal in Denmark! Luckily we made the trip to Malmo... Big grin

I've never been a big fan of Red Bull, can just isn't big enough. I prefer Diet Rockstar. Cheaper than Red Bull and twice (or 3x) the size.

No, it is not a tax, you just have to pay 0,25 EUR deposit which you get back when you return the can to the shop.

Red Bull tastes great, it is one of my favourite soft drinks, unfortunately a bit pricey.

Then this will change soon, unless the company somehow managed to convince the government or Deutsche Pfanggesellschaft Red Bull Sugar Free was a healthy juice:

"Ausgenommen vom Pfand sind nach wie vor Wein, Sekt, Spirituosen, Milch und Saefte. Ein Pfand muss auch nicht auf oekologisch vorteilhafte Verpackungen, zum Beispiel Getraenkekartons, Schlauch- und Standbodenbeutel gezahlt werden."

I consulted good ole Google which found the following on the Wikipedia website:

Die zuckerfreie Variante Red Bull Sugarfree ist hingegen zum Teil pfandfrei erhältlich, da es sich um ein diabetikertaugliches Getränk handelt. Es existiert jedoch auch eine Pfand-Variante.

No deposit because it is adapted for diabetics.

Lol, how stupid, does that mean diabetics doesn't have to recycle? I thought the deposit on cans was to encourage people to turn them back in order to recycle the metal. I'm allergig to sorbitol and aspartam, should I be free from paying deposit on the regular Red Bull then, as it has been adapted to my needs?

Russians don't have V or W, it's "B" in cyrillic, which translates to Polish "W". And wodka existed in Poland before Russia "invented" it...

I have never drunk good Russian Wodka, just the mass products like Gorbatchow, Smirnoff, etc. but once I had a really good Polish Wodka, a colleague of my mother brought it from Poland, I can't remember the name but the color of it was not clear, it was rather gold and there was a staw in the bottle. Friggin' good stuff!

It was "Zubrowka", with a piece of grass off the fields where the Polish version of a bizon grasses in the Eastern part of Poland, the only refuge for thoese animals...

By the way, I was pretty amazed when I saw a group of Russians drinking Wodka in a bar in Moscow, when I had drunk the same amount, then I had either ended up in hospital or in a coffin! The best thing was when one of them paid, went outside, entered his SUV and left with it...... the dude had at least 2 per mil.  rotfl

Yes they can drink Wodka like we drink water. But the amazing thing is if you start drinking Hefeweizen with them they will get drunk with a normal amount. It depends what you are used to.
