How Do You Wash Your Car?

Fri Jun 02, 2006 6:22 pm

Do you use :

a) a carwash
b) a high-pressure washer
c) a bucket of water and a sponge
d) wait until it rains

I use b) for the Golf and c) for all the other vehicles.

I hand the keys over to a man, tell him what I want then go and have a coffee while the car gets cleaned. A pager goes off when it is ready to collect.

Great.

Sometimes by hand, but I'm usually too lazy so I usually use the self-serve car wash.

Yes to both questions. I've thought about the Mr. Clean System - it's an all in one gizmo that guarantees not to leave spots, etc - but haven't quite gotten there yet. Meguiars does a great job.

Quoting Daleaholic (Reply 12):

Way too much road grime up here for a sponge . . . the brush I use is incredibly soft, but gets the junk off . . . I'm afraid a sponge would simply grind it into the paint.

Thanks . . . takes about 2 hours to wash properly.

The Meguiars works really well . . . the big ticket is it doesn't spot so bad. And cleans up nicely . . . it's not too expensive, I can get a US Gallon for US$18.

BADHT

I use a super-soft brush made of a Pigmy's pubic hair, with a special soap, the name of which I can't recall. Of course, I have a special brush for the wheels and chrome. Also, I have an RO/DI filter, so I wash and rinse with that. The RO/DI removes any trace of minerals and other deposits from the water, so there is nothing to leave spots when the water evaporates.

For the interior, I first sweep with a special brush with thick rubber bristles to remove the dog hair. Then, I vacuum it with my Dyson. Finally, I have a variety of ArmorAll products that I use on the delicates. A simple windex is used for the glass.

Is anyone as obsessive/compulsive as me and go so far as to remove gravel from the tires?  Smile

I use a bucket, but instead of a sponge, I use one of those white cotton mitts to scrub the dirt off the car. Then I dry with a chamois. Plus, I spray the tires with a tire shine product. I also put Rain Block on the windows.

A mix of a and d. Normally, I just let the rain do it work, because it rains enough in Hamburg after all, but during spring, all the crap from some of the trees require a visit to the car wash. Damn trees turn the car from black into greenish-yellow.

Wife's car goes to the groomer. I wash my car and 'the bitch' on the lawn. Little extra watering there and soap is good for the grass.

Hose, bucket and sponge. Armor-All for the wheels and a similar product for the weather seals. I always open the doors, trunk, hood and gas filler cap cover and clean the edges of these and inside them. I'm the guy you want to buy a used car from.

Couple times a year I pressure wash under the hood on each car.

I pay the kid down the street $10 per car every weekend to wash both of mine. Not sure how he does it, never really watched, but he does a great job every time, and only takes about an hour to complete both cars.

He couldn't believe his luck when a whole load of my wife's family came to stay for a weekend...7 cars and we all chipped in and paid him $100 for all of them.

A for both my personal car and my work vehicle. I'll run my car through the automatic car wash, my work vehicle, I actually have to wash it myself at the car wash. I used to wash it at home with the bucket of soap and water, but my old work truck was a bitch to wash that way (10' high at the top).

I don't in BNE we have stringent water restrictions we can only wash our car with buckets (no hoses at all) and effective 13th June we can only use hoses to fill swimming pools between before 7am and after 7pm 3 days a week determined by your house number last time I tried to wash my car with a bucket their were great big streaks left in my windscreen and I had to take my car to carwash at the servo to get rid of them so I just wash my car at the servo now instead of washing it myself.
