How Fast Have You Been Driving With A Car?

Sun Jun 04, 2006 3:52 am

My record is 235 km/h on Autobahn outside Hamburg with a SAAB.

(235 km/h would be 146 MPH i think...)

250 kph with my father's BMW 540i on the A3 at night a few years ago. I picked up my parents at FRA airport and actually I wanted to take another Autobahn home but I heard in the radio that it was closed due to some truck accident, so I decided to take the very empty A3 via Cologne.

This afternoon I drove approx. 230 kph with my father's new Audi A8 on the A44.

Fastest speed with my current car (BMW 318i) was just 130 km/h (I just got it 2 months ago, the legal limit in Switzerland is 120 km/h and I have not yet had the chance to take it across the border to Germany.)

Fastest speed overall was 225 km/h in a Mercedes E320 between Hannover and Hamburg.

Highest illegal speed that I got caught for was 110 km/h in a 70 km/h zone in Zimbabwe (they had just gotten speed guns from the German government as part of development aid package)  Embarrassment

166.71 MPH or 268 KPH on the clock at a racetrack in nomex and helmet and with onboard fire extinguishing etc. etc.

I will not go over about 80 MPH anymore in a car without air effects. Been to about 105 MPH several times in cars and motorcycles but just not interested in that anymore. Over 200 MPH steering with my feet! (Hot & high takeoff in DC-9-10 series)

Oh, and 100 MPH in a Corvette on a freeway onramp with the California Highway Patrol in the car with me.  Smile

Best I ever did was 140 mph in a Dodge R/T with a calibrated speedometer. It had the 440 CID, dual quads, torqueflight and a 2.91 rear gear....a dog off the line but it was ordered for high speed travel by the owner.

It was a frightening experience...I may have puked.

170kph in my VW Golf-2. Still waiting for an excuse to take my "new" VW Golf-3 to Germany to test her out. Though considering how she handles at 140kph I doubt it will actually be faster then the old car.

210 km/h on the A7 between Hamburg and Hannover, on the A5 near FRA, on the A20 between Rostock and Lübeck and on the A395 south of Braunschweig... that's it, I guess. But I don't really like driving this fast, it gets too stressful above 170 to 180 km/h even on an empty Autobahn. So I only do it when I'm 110% awake and in a hurry.

I've done 110mph (177km/h) in my Toyota Tundra, which in itself isn't that fast but considering it was a 5,000 pound half-ton pickup, it seemed pretty fast!!

Maybe (neither car had a speedometer that went that high) 117 Mph in a Nissan 280ZX. It was not a race per say, but it was in the early days of I-75 in South Florida when you could find yourself alone on the road at that time.

There is one place on I-80 west of Donner summit where you can have a downhill straight and the uphill runout all to yourself on some days. (Damn California doesn't put up mile markers or I'd tell you where) So even if the CHP saw you they couldn't turn around and come back for a couple of miles. You can use the uphill stretch to get back down to normal speed.

I've used that spot to run from 75 up to 100 in a few short seconds. Then lift off and coast it out. I figure my car, coming off the last corner at about 80 could probably hit 120 in that short straight and still be slowed by the top of the hill without using brakes. Kinda fun every now and then.

When I was a young, immature lad, 110mph on US highway 151 between Iowa City and Dubuque, Iowa. Desolate, middle of the night two-lane road, no one around and certainly no cops.

That's how I found out that there was a governor on the car haha, as soon as I hit 110 the engine went to idle until it got back around 80 or 90.

Ahhh, those were the days when you couldn't possibly consider the ramifications of anything you did beyond the next few minutes. haha

Don't know how many people have been on the M6 Toll Road in the UK.

My Dad in his Porsche reached 145mph from a standing start off the toll booth, to where the road goes back into 3 lanes.

God that was fun. Big grin Big grin

145kph in my mom's '00 Accord on the 407. Bayview to 9th line and back. She doesn't drive on the highway and we needed to get the deposits out of the engine so I really pushed it for a few minutes. The only time that car goes above 80kph is when me or my dad drive it.

My personal preference is no more than 120-130kph on a highway unless you have to pass another car. We drove to Barrie and back to YYZ this morning in a rainstorm, we had to pass all these long tankers. My dad went up to 140kph in his Avalon to pass them. He likes to keep it below 130kph when driving normally though. I have no intention of driving more than like 160kph on highways. Not worth the risk of losing control or getting tickets.

Passenger: 110mph outside Paris in 1999. My dad was driving our new Benz, which we'd picked up a few days before in Stuttgart & were touring Europe with. Followed closely by 108mph on the Autobahn near Stuttgart two years ago.

Driving: 82mph in South Carolina on the way to Florida three years ago. I'd love to go faster, though.

Somewhere around 240 or 250 km/h in a rented Audi A6, but my own cars were usually slower - just up to 220 in my Audi A3.

These days, I prefer 250 to 300 km/h as a passenger on ICE trains... haven't had a car in 5 years now, and don't miss it even a small bit.

yes  I don't have a car (few college students in Germany do) and I don't want one. If I lived back home and were unable to use my parents' cars, things would of course be different due to lack of public transportation. But for now, I'm happy with my "Semesterticket" and BahnCard 50.  Wink

My record is 230 kph on, you guessed it, the A7 Hamburg-Hanover, but also the A5 and A45 on the way to Frankfurt.
Also 220 kph on the A23 and A24, outside of Hamburg. All of those done in a Opel Vectra.
Although, normally on the speed limit-less parts, I usually just put Cruise Control at 130-150 kph, because the fuel burn simply doesn't justify doing 200 all the way between Hamburg and Frankfurt.

230kph with my Dad´s BMW 5 series two years ago between Frankfurt and Nuremburg on the A3. I made it from Frankfurt to Munich in significantly less than three hours that day...which is quite exceptional because there´s usually a massive traffic jam around Würzburg.
I really like driving fast but will only do so when the conditions are adequate. Unfortunately my own car won´t drive faster than 170kph unless it´s going downhill steeply...  Sad

115 MPH in my friend's Civic. We were trying to pass on a two-lane road and started going head to head with an 18 wheeler. We didn't budge, he had to move into the shoulder as we flew past him. That was only going about 90 or so. Once that was done the adrenaline was going, so we figured what the hell! Punched it, got to 115 mph. On the way home (this place was 3 hours away) we got to 115 again and 110 a little on down the road.

Good times!

I hit 93 in Gillespie County, TX. Unfortunately, I got caught. I didn't have a radar detector and I had never seen speed traps in two-lane country highways, so I thought there was no problem.
Another time, around 9am on I-10 on a Sunday in West Texas, I hit 110mph for a little bit just to see how fast I could get going. Once I hit that 110, I figured that was fast enough.
I used to drive fast all over the place. These days I barely go over the speed limit. I guess I'm getting old...
All of this was done on a 4-cylinder Saturn.

With me at the wheel, I've hit the limited top speed of 249 km/h in my '89 Merc 560 SEC - despite the fact that it's almost old enough to vote, it was still pulling hard up to the governed speed. Furthermore, I've driven from Calgary to Red Deer (about 150 km north) in slightly more than 45 minutes. If you have a heavy foot like I do, you can easily exceed 160 on the highway and not even notice until everything on the road is in your rear-view mirror.

As for riding, I've been just short of 200 mph (320 km/h) in a Lamborghini Murcielago - and I didn't like it.

My land speed record was made last week on the A3 autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg in this car:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b174/airliban/Frankfurt/DSC01221.jpg

It was a black BMW 320i Touring with a 6-speed manual transmission and iDrive (however no leather seats). Engine was nothing great but I managed to get it up to 220kmh, so that was good. I think thats about 134mph. Here is a photo of me driving:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b174/airliban/Frankfurt/DSC01253.jpg

Prior to that my land speed record was made in my 2000 Volkswagen Jetta VR6. I got her up to 128mph on the 23 Freeway between Moorpark and Westlake in Ventura County, this was back in early 2001. I was coming back from night class and it was around 10:30pm and there were no other cars on the road.

Here is a photo of me driving the Jetta wearing my England jersey:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b174/airliban/Jetta/DSC00779.jpg

I wasn't going anywhere near 128mph there.

Forgot one relevant story.

I was delivering a Fiat 124 in the days before Nevada had a speed limit. I came to a downhill stretch followed by a brand-new nine mile straight stretch with no traffic ahead. I shoved my foot all the way into the carburetors and held it there until things stopped changing. The speedometer spasmed over around 120 MPH for a while, then I backed off.

Later, using max-rated RPM, gear ratio, differential ratio and tire circumference I calculated that the actual top speed reached was well under a hundred. The speedometer lied! Probably in self-defense.

At the time, Bill Harrah had a Ferrari dealership here and there was a photo on the wall in the parts department - looking over his shoulder at the speedo reading 165 MPH on the Pyramid Highway.

Isn't the Touareg limited to 130 mph? or is that the speed in which it tends to flip? (I saw a max 130mph sticker on a v6) You must have alota guts to go that fast in a SUV, but i must say that V8 is one heck of an engine (Though that V-10 was chasis-wrenching)

I was only above 180mph for only about 1.5-2 minutes. You cant make any non-interstate turns. Straight road in ND though, I didnt have any curves.

The BMW M5 handled just a tad better, at that speed, the steering becomes almost obsolete.

I got my Dodge up to 175 on a pretty tight road coming down from Big white (ski hill) acouple weeks ago, it's hard to open it up anywhere around here since it seems like cops are all over the highways, but if I ever get it on the Coquihalla (highway from Kelowna to Vancouver) I'll be sure to get it well over 200.

Touareg is limited to 140mph atleast the V8. The Touareg was made for both the on road and off road performance. The Touareg was made to go 120mph and be drivin on highways at that speed because of the autobahn, its a German car. It handles great at high speeds. Drove a little 100+ tonight and I will change lanes slowy at around 110mph with out any problems at all. Sure it is a 5500lb SUV but it has huge breaks and handles extremely well at high speeds atleast much better than the only other car I gone 100+ in a Mercedes CLK320. Remember it is the same body as the Porsche Cayenne. Now only way I would go 130 is a straight road with no traffic which I had at the time.

The V8 is one hell of an engine sometimes on the highway I wont even notice passing 90mph or even 100. I just be driving and look down at the speedometer and have to slow down. Its a pleasure to drive. And that V10 553lbs of torque! But what I really want is the W12 Touareg 450hp limited speed of 155mph. To bad they only make 500 of them and none come to the US and the price tag is above $100,000.

Pete the Pole sez you might be wrong!

I see that the V6 maxes out @ 122mph, while the V8/V10 go to 130mph.

This is for 2005 models btw after a quick search on google.

I know that I've caught myself at 110mph going through Ellensburg, WA. That's the highest speed that I can recall...

when it comes to a steep hill, it struggles and i keep considering getting out and pushing it to make it faster.

Maybe (neither car had a speedometer that went that high) 117 Mph in a Nissan 280ZX. It was not a race per say, but it was in the early days of I-75 in South Florida when you could find yourself alone on the road at that time.

The fastest I've driven was also in a 280zx, but lame in comparison - 170km/h in an 80 zone in the middle of the night. Proably wouldn't get away with it now, in the suburbs at least!

I've done some stupid things before, in Indonesia, where the cops drive a Hyundai Excel and Toyota Yaris class.... Mind you, going 150km/h there could get you busted, but if you go over 180, the cops just don't bother.. that's pretty funny, but that's just because their patrol cars are sh!tty.

I actually took my dad's car on an empty motorway there, going over to a garage to get some service done. It was a BMW 523i manual, and I pushed it to around 220km/h. It was very much the end of the gas pedal for that car that time - now that it's aged, so won't quite truly reach the same speed again now..

I was only 16 or 17 - about 4 years ago now (yes, i know, i've been driving illegally there since 13 and got my licence at 14 - cause my dad thinks it's better for me to learn at an early age, and learn from an experienced driver, rather than trying it out myself, and probably kill myself - but then again, it's indonesia.. no specific set rules)

Talking about stupidity, back here in Sydney, i've taken my Cooper S, at that time was only a couple of weeks old, and I was still on my Learner's licence.. Saturday morning, heading over to Bankstown Airport for my flying lesson, and I was in the car with a relative (He had to be there for legality issues :p, even though i already knew how to drive - but I was yet to turn 17 then..). It was a quiet residential area, with a downhill... I floored my pedal, and did 140km/h in a 50 area... so I was pretty stupid back then I suppose..

These days, i thought to myself.. my stupid days are over. I'm going into my 20s soon, and at that age, i don't want to be part of statistics. Life is worth much more than speed and stupidity!
