Anyone Been To Turkmenistan?

Mon Jun 05, 2006 3:05 am

As the subject suggests.

I've always wondered what it would be like.

What does the "stan" mean in all these names ending with it?

I believe it means land, place, etc. Hopefully someone who actually knows will chip in.

Reportedly, it's ruled by a nutcase who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread.

-stan means "home of", so in this case it is "Home of the Turkmens"..."Home of the Uzbeks", "Home of the Kyrgyz", etc.

Saparmurat Niyazov, the President of Turkmenistan, is in fact criticized by the West a lot. He's done such things as close libraries and Western style universities in Turkmenistan, changed the alphabet from Cyrillic to a Latin based one, and cut off many ties in foreign policy, including a lot of UN participation.

However, as someone who has a goal of going to every single country in the world (realistic, huh?  Wink) I hope to get there someday!

As far as I know, it is a Turkish tag and yes it means "home of" "land of". In Turkmenistan's case you can say it means where Turkmen people live. Though its "istan" not "stan". In Turkish many country names finish with this tag. Such as:

Yunanistan: Greece
Bulgaristan: Bulgaria
Hýrvatistan: Croatia
Ermenistan: Armenia
Hindistan: India
Gürcistan: Georgia
Mogolistan: Mongolia
Macaristan: Hungary
Suudi Arabistan: Saudi Arabia

plus a few more maybe

Me too, I hope I can make it there till 2007. I heard domestic flights are very cheap (a few dollars per flight). The best information (by a Travel Agency) I found so far no Turmenistan in the web is: http://www.stantours.com

Are there no restrictions on foreigners travelling to and from the country? And do you require a minder like, for example, Iran?

I'd really like to go there....or anywhere there is a bizarre personality cult (ie N. Korea and Togo until recently). Entry requirements below:

You need a letter of invitation from someone in Turkmenistan...I'm sure a travel agency can arrange that.
