U.S. Biometric Passport

Mon Jun 05, 2006 4:49 am

Does anybody know if the U.S. biometric passport is out yet? The State Department website is very vague on the subject... Anybody have one? The new designs for them posted on the State Dept. website are hideous!
Now it should be "IFLYDCA"

It is out and they are issuing it but I am not sure if it is a trial run or full product though? People that think they are horrible and it is invading their personal space are nuts and need a life that's just my personal opinion.

They are being issued to government officials and diplomats right now, but by the end of 2006 should be in full swing...

A Little un-related, but when I re-new my passport, will I get the old one back?

I have both of my old ones with "expired" or something like that done with a machine that punches the word into it with little holes.

Yes, I know that Germany and Belgium (and I believe in Switzerland) are already issuing them.. perhaps some other countries are as well. To remain a part of the "Visa Waiver" scheme outlined by the US all the 27 countries on the list must have plans to implement biometric technology in their standard issue passports.

Yes, as AeroWesty said you fo get it back with holes in it and a huge red CANCELLED (or something like that) stamped on the signature page.

One more note-

There is a little flip-book applet on the following page that shows they have moved the info and signiature page from the back of the front cover to the 3rd and 4th pages much like a lot of EU passports. (What a shame, I thought it was much more logical to have it at the very front).  Sad

I just received a passport through the Miami office about two months ago, and no biometric data had been collected during the application process. As to whether or not it contains a chip which includes personal information and a photo, I honestly can't tell.

The UK is rolling them out with the highly controversial ID card scheme, starting next year i believe (assuming it passes parliament, which it will.)

The design of that is HIDEOUS... But fortunately I won't have to deal with it until 2014. Hopefully by then, they would have come out with something more appealing.

I don't like the new US passport as much as the old one. At least they didn't change the cover, I love the cover of our passports. I also wish the ID page was on the back of the cover, like it is now. Some of it is overdone, but oh well. I get a new passport in a few days so I'll be good for the next ten years.

I wouldn't count on it. How old is the current design, a few decades? We aren't talking about US Airways liveries here.

I have an Australian one, all passports since Oct 05 are issued as biometric. I am hoping to find out how quick and easy it is when I go to SFO in July.

I currently have a french visa. What happens when my passport expires, as the visa expires in 2016. and the passport in 2014. Do they issue me a new visa, or what?

A French visa until 2016!?! WOW! Why for so long. And also, US Passport holders don't need a visa to enter France, so why do you need one in the first place?

Most countries require you to get a visa if you are planning on staying in thier country for more than ninety days, reguardless of nationality/citzenship.

I don't know how things work with France, but I have my valid US Visa on an expired passport and I haven't got any problems when entering that country. You just show the immigration officer both passports (the one with the visa on it and the valid one) and it's alright.

Again, not precisely France, but the USA usually issues tourist visas valid for ten years. Mine is valid until 2015.

Wow that's awesome. Ties between Russia and the U.S. are tough, and most Russians are rejected from getting a U.S. visa. If they are VERY lucky they can get one for 1 year. It's really sad.  Sad
