Ikea Opens In Michigan What's The Big Deal

Tue Jun 06, 2006 6:36 am

I don't get what the big deal is. Yeah, when I was 21 and living in Germany I went to Ikea once. It was cheap do it yourself furniture and stuff I didn't buy then, and wouldn't buy now.

But listening to the local TV News and papers, the opening of Ikea in the Detroit area is almost as newsworthy as the second coming.

I don't get it!

Ikea doesn't open its first Michigan store until Wednesday, but more than 50 people were lining up outside the store at Ford and Haggerty roads in Canton Monday afternoon. About six of them had tents and the rest had their sleeping bags for the two-day camp out, said store manager Mark McCaslin.

Audrey Seilheimer, a 28 year-old mother and professional photographer from Canton, was the first in line at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Mmmm, IKEA. Westy hearts IKEA.

They have a lot of fun accessories and stuff, besides DIY furniture. I've a gorgeous mirror from there in my bedroom that floats on two disks. And an anatomically correct valet stand.  ziplip  I don't have any real furniture from IKEA, but when I needed an extra worktable, it was cheap, convenient and I didn't have to worry about it if it got damaged, and it looked sharp, too.

And don't forget the meatballs!  yummy

LOL!!! It's good stuff for the money, but not THAT good? Those armchairs are sort of flimsy, I wouldn't wait outside for 2 days for one!

Well in all honesty it is no where near the city of Detroit! It is actually closer to the area of Ann Arbor Michigan.

The best part about IKEA is you get to go back every year, after you throw all your broken, shitty IKEA furniture away.

My father still tells me how he bought furniture at IKEA in cologne, only to drive to the Ruhr area afterwards to get the screws there... Yet they went to Ikea over and over again.

I must admit: IKEA is great. Everytime I am there I regret going there, but still I always spend lots of money. The axis of evil Burger King - McD - IKEA is threatening my pockets...

I think IKEA is part of a diabolical Swedish plan to take over the world. Once they have entered enough of the major markets they will attack. Since everyone will be too damn busy trying to put their new entertainment centers together and will easily submit b/c the Swedish meatballs are laced w/ mind altering drugs.

I like IKEA. Got a couple of things from there when visiting Chicago, as it's great for students who only need the stuff for a few years and don't feel bad about tossing it because you only paid 10 bucks for the coffeetable. Surprisingly, my coffeetable is two years old and pretty heavily used and tossed around, stored, etc, and is in mint condition...looks new. Plus it looks classy.

I also realized after going there that they have some better quality stuff that (of course) might be slightly more expensive, but still pretty nicely priced.

Considering that Oakland County, is one of the weathiest areas in the country, there are plenty of people with the means.

When people are still building multi-million dollar homes in Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, West Bloomfield, Northville, Birmingham and the Grosse Pointes, to name a few areas, there is plenty of interest in living here.

Now, Orange County....didn't they file for bankruptcy a few years ago?

The line up before the store opens is probably due to a grand opening promotion where the first ones get gift cards worth $100 or more or ultra cheap prices on selected items (like a new chair for $59 rather than $129). I would also suggest that they may get a number of visitors from southern Ontario, just across the river from Detroit.
I have been going to Ikea for a number of years, mainly at the Elizabeth, NJ store, across the NJ Turnpike from EWR (no you can't look at the airplane movements at EWR from there) or their Paramus, NJ store. From glasses, to accessory furniture like a coffee table, my computer desk, to bookcases, to kitchen stuff, I try to go there about 4 times a year (especially at their seasonal sales). I have had the meatball platter many time there as well as cheap hot dogs (50 Cents each - you can get 2 hot dogs, a 3oz bag of chip and a medium soda for $3.00 (incl. sales tax).

The city of Detroit itself is not the greatest place in the world (with that we can agree), however, we here in the Metro Area take pride in our little corner of the world, and do take ofense at comments like yours.

Yeah, we are sensistive to this, and we are working to improve as much as we can.

The food is very best part of IKEA. It may be cheap and plebeian, but that's the way we all like it.

Us New Yorkers can't wait for the Brooklyn super-mega IKEA to open. It will be the 4th IKEA store in the NYC metropolitan area, but will be the only one that is built within the City itself.

I was going to post this- One word- Detroiter. But apparently, Airliners.net deemed that it was quote "too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand." Hey thanks. I'm glad to know that.

Well in all honesty it is no where near the city of Detroit!

Well Damn can you blame them?

I like IKEA as well, I have a bunch of things that came from the store in Scumberg, outside Chicago.

All those posts and nobody got around to listing the Real Big Deal about IKEA:

Go to IKEA with friends, all under the influence of your favorite thing-that-makes-things-funny. Read the product tags aloud to your friends as they do the same. Afterwards, go fill up on meatballs at the Cafe. Satisfying. You can have almost the same experience online, but you'd better have the meatballs ready (and the sauce described above sounds fab.)

Honestly, the names...Lisa Simpson knew enough to shun the Pupli (where the hell's the umlaut key..?) pencil holder.

Its known as a hard launch. Ikea will go and make a song and dance to drum up awarness. It will all settle down in a few days and you will go back to your boring mundane life.
