Official World Cup Thread

Tue Jun 06, 2006 7:48 am

The beginning of the World Cup is just hours away so I decided to create this thread for a place to talk about the World Cup. My prediction for who is going to win, Brazil. Who I want to win, the underdog, Iran...well in all seriousness go USA!!! Any predictions or insight?

COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

Second favourites to win behind Brazil, and we all know how Brazil can have their off days (France 3 - 0 Brazil, anyone?).

It's coming home...

The popular choice is Brazil, most fans from outside of Brazil would point to them as winners. I'd love to see England go all the way, and if they play to their ability they can. But we would have to beat Brazil somewhere along the way, and i can't see that happenening. Ronaldo, Adriano, Kaka, Ronaldinho....four match winners just there! Argentina, France, Holland and Germany are potential winners too, just depends on how they perform on the day. It's dificult to make accurate predictions before the tournament, but everything will be inveiled in the next four weeks. I can't wait!

Those Brazillian names certainly are match winners, but then so are Beckham (back on form and fit, with inch perfect passes and killer through balls), Gerrard (as long as Carrick play the holding role and Sven allows Gerrard to roam), Cole and Carragher (tightest defenders in the world, imo), Lampard (has positively owned the midfield of almost every match he played this season). We're lacking up front, but I really believe that if Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard et al can deliver like we know they can, then Courch, Owen, hopefully Rooney, and - heck - even Defoe should be able to convert. And I'd love to see Walcott play a blinder too.

This is definitely the strongest England team we've had since probably the 1986 squad. Plus the 10 year rule applies - 1986, missed out to the unfair Hand of God. 1996 (Euro), missed out to an offside German goal and then a missed Southgate pen. 2006 - third time lucky  Smile COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

There is now a controversy regarding the injury Michael Ballack has. He will not start in the inaugural match after all and is now being accused of underestimating his injury and for having behaved unprofessionally on the matter.

Source (in German): http://focus.msn.de/sport/wm2006/verletzung_nid_30121.html

If these accusations are true, then this truely shows what a person and how overrated Ballack is. Personally I wouldn't even have nominated him, especially with his recent slacking off and this deal he got from Chelsea, which will be an incentive for him to continue slacking off.

We're less than 24 hours away from the World Cup inaugural match between Germany and Costa Rica (which Germany will lose 0:2  duck  ).

OK I am American ,  duck

And I am going to Europe for about 10 days leaving tomorrow .... what do I need to know about WC. Who is the best , who is the best underdog, in other words while I am at a pub ... fill in this sentance for me .... I sure like ________ but the way ________ has been playing , they may be good enought to beat ________.

Then if they ask me more questions , what should I do other than offer to buy them a beer or run.  expressionless

Should be no problem. Germany will start with beating Costa Rica and the Polaks will follow a few hours later with KO'ing Ecuador.

I bet some people in Central- and South America will be pretty pissed tomorrow night.  Silly

I'm so glad somebody has started the 'Official' World Cup thread. There are so many others that I guess must be unofficial. The World Cup is such a big event with so many different subjects to talk about I can't see this thread lasting the duration.

It's kinda like me starting 'The Official News Thread - post here your thoughts on any news stories that come up'.

Funny thing I saw this on the Late Show last night....

Top Ten Signs You Have World Cup Fever

10. You change your name from Kenny to Pele

9. On tax return you list occupation: "Hooligan"

8. After you successfully toast an english muffin, you rip off your shirt and run around the house

7. Whenever the mailman shows up you scream, 'MAAAAAAAAIIIILLLLLLLLL!"

6. Have a tattoo of Czech striker Pavel Nedved on your ass

5. You replace your hairpiece with chunk of sod from Wembley Stadium

4. Aches, a rash and vomiting - - I'm sorry, those are signs you have Bird Flu

3. In accordance with league standards, you've inflated your pants to 8.5 pounds per square inch

2. Every four years, you walk around in a Brandi Chastain sports bra

1. You're not American

Ahh..the mystery of St. Denis. Who knows what happened, but the team that entered the Stade de France that day was not the same one that beat the Netherlands in Marseille only a few days before. Enough trips down Memory Lane...

The entire world always picks Brazil to win it all yet Brazilians rarely think they are the ones who will win it all. Brazilians expect nothing less than a title and there will be hell to pay if there's no title. The buzz in Brazil is that this team is as good as the 82 team with Zico, Socrates, et al because a lot of these players have been playing at the international level for quite a while (for instance, Cafu and Roberto Carlos have been with the selecao for 8 years running) so they have great chemistry.

Now that Rooney is gone, England's chances are gone. Maybe a trip to the quarterfinals. I watched that Jamaica friendly and I was impressed with how graceful and agile Peter Crouch is for a man of his stature.
I hear a lot of great things about the Netherlands but I was unimpressed with their performance against Mexico last week. Both sides seemed very uninspired.

I hope to see Switzerland do well, if only for themselves. I am a little biased because one of my best friends is Swiss so I have closely followed with him how far Swiss footy has come since I met him and started following them in 2001.
Oh no, she's getting impatient! Take a stab at it!

I'm not particularly interested in the World Cup, however since some of you folks are, I thought I'd mention that last Tuesday's USA TODAY newspaper, page 6C on 06/06/06 (how's that for 6-6-6-6 ?) has a nice, I think, color graphic of all the 32 teams' home jerseys.

Just thought I'd mention this in case someone (ah-hemm) forgets who's who.

Brazil will win: "the numbers don't lie"

What number?
3964

Check it out:

Winner: Argentina (1978 / 1986) and 1978 + 1986 = 3964
Winner: Germany (1974 / 1990) and 1974 + 1990 = 3964
Winner: Brazil (1970 / 1994) and 1970 + 1994 = 3964
Winner: France/England (both hosting countries, the only time they've won)(1966 / 1998) and 1966 + 1998 = 3964
Winner: Brazil (1962 / 2002) and 1962 + 2002 = 3964

And... Winner 1982: Italy. And? 1982 = 3964 - 1982

Another way to see it, "the pyramid". Look the years of World Cup and the champions. After 1982, it started to repeat backwards

Italy:______________________________1982
Argentina:______________________1978____1986
Germany:___________________1974____________1990
Brazil:__________________1970____________________1994
Host country:________1966___________________________1998
Brazil:___________1962__________________________________2002

I know, it might be BS, but isn't it kind of weird?

So, it this rule continues, the new winner will be the same of 1958...

B R A Z I L

Jesus H. Christ, the World Cup in Germany is as good as ruined here in Costa Rica, thanks to the announcement made by Repretel, that they have re-hired Manuel Antonio Obando as commentator. Obando is the worst commentator IN THE WORLD! He refuses to pronounce names right, he constantly makes fun of names as well and doesn't take his job seriously. I thought Repretel had sacked the guy for being incompetent, but I never thought they'd ever re-hire him.  Angry

To be honest, I prefer even Werner Hansch over that jackass Obando, and that means something.

No good, because we'd still have to put with Cristian Mora on Radio Monumental, and he's also pretty annoying. It would be different if Radio Columbia had the broadcasting rights over radio.

I'd watch them too, but Premiere has two advantages:
The overall quality is better, and they still have 4:3 available whereas ARD/ZDF are just 16:9.
