Crumbs In/on The Keyboard ..........

Tue Jun 06, 2006 10:12 pm

It seems that no matter what I do, by the end of every week my keyboards are full of crap, the only solution so far being to attack them with one of those cans of compressed air that us IT guys love so much.

This week I even found a bit of rotting tuna!  Wow!

I daren't look at some of my colleagues k/b's, knowing full well that the won't have been cleaned since the PC's were installed over a year ago!

Has anyone found an easy way of preventing crumbs and general dust from gathering underneath and between the keys on their keyboard?

Crumbs, well... don't eat anywhere near the keyboard, duh  Wink

As for dust, I can't think of a practical solution other than cover the keyboard when not in use.
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Pick the keys off and give it a good scrub. If its a colleagues keyboard, re-assemble the keys in a different order to confuse them....

Two answers:

1) Get a keyboard cover that is made to type thru
2) Get a keyboard that is waterproof, because they also are food proof. Some people dont likenthe feel of them though.

Thanks guys, but I think I'll stick to giving it a good dose of compressed air now and again.

O god that is sooo funny, we always do it in our I.T rooms at school and normally replace V-B K-l and other not so noticeable ones like that.

You could by one of those etched-key keyboards that don't have traditional keys and are completely flat. They cost and bomb and I've heard they take a bit of getting used to, but it would certainly solve the problem.

Rule #1......food and drinks are not allowed near the computer!! That way there is no chance of spilling something or having crumbs in the keyboard.

No food near the keyboard? No way!!!! How the hell do you eat the crisps and buns while at work? Or the spag bol in the den? I'll put up with the ecosytem developing under my keys thank you. Big grin

Mind you, I do draw the line at liquid, thats just silly! Makes the k/b all sticky! And, I am reliably informed, so does something else! Big grin
