No way would I download this. I just hope they get the bugs and weaknesses we often see with Microsoft malware before it comes out.

Sorry you have a crap connection.

I'm going to download it and give it a go on one of my boxes just to see how it works. Once I determine it's yet another more slightly stable version of 95, I'll go back to XP pro.

You think that's bad? I have a 128k connection... that would take some 100 hours!

And before you point it out, Ted, I already know I have a really crap connection.  Silly
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

The last 'slightly more stable version of 95' was Windows Millenium Edition. Windows hasnt used the 95 codebase since then, its all been based off the NT series.

Fundamental differences at all levels.

Yes, behind the scenes has changed a bit, but it's still human code, and it's still a gui, and it's still a 'start' button on the lower left hand corner. The rest is filler/window dressing.

Tough question to answer per-say, but maybe you can answer for yourself... Why would you install a TRUE beta product onto a PC that has data attached to it, that you care about?

I started downloading it last night. got about 50% of the way through. I hope it resumes OK!

Im still trying to decide whether to risk installing it on my machine, or whether to run it through VMWare.......

Has anyone tried installing it yet? Will it happily dual boot alongside XP?

Google it... in short it allows you to run multiple OSes at the same time on one physical box as if they were seperate boxes.

Okay. You should get yourself an external harddrive. I have a maxtor harddrive with 200 gb... it is very useful!

Maxtor drivers are fantastic. Sure, Ive had my failures with them, but at work we use them almost exclusively and we cannot really attribute a greater failure rate to maxtor drivers than any of the ones that come as OEM (do NOT buy Fujitsu, because out of 120 drives we have had 110 fail within 18 months with 1 year warranties on the drives, replaced them all with Maxtor drives and I think we have had maybe 5 failures in the 2 years since).

Maxtor on the other hand come with 3 to 5 year warranties and are much more reliable.

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
* DVD-ROM Drive3.
* Audio output capability.
* Internet access capability.

Can someone please tell me what Aero2 is??

Yes, thats the down side of the VMWare approach. On the other hand its easy to install then remove, so I might give that a try first and see how it works out, then consider installing it properly

Thanks! wow it looks pretty cool!

Would an ATI X600 do?

And does anyone know if FS will be able to run using Windows Vista??

edit:
I am in doubt about whether to install it at all or not now, because it says that this beta version isn't intended for home usage, but for software developers, etc.... is it worth it?

Does Vista even install on VMWare? That would be the best way to try the thing out before plonking it on a full fledged pc.

The GUI is nice I guess but I'll have to get the beta to see if microsoft have finally decided to improve the responsiveness and multitasking performance of their OS to something closer from the mac OSX.

I was seriously considering it but it's time limited to 2007 then you gotta buy a copy. I just got done spending $60 putting XP home on my bargain basement clunker backup...works good, lasts a long time, it ain't W98.

I know this is only a Beta, but figured I would give it a try. At least I know what it's like by the time it comes out for sale. If you don't like the new look, it can be configured to look "Windows Classic" with the old colors and start menu.

I downloaded it, I installed it, I used it for about an hour... and I'm currently reformatting the drive.

It looks nice, but the performance was absolutely horrible - just opening IE7 took several seconds... not to mention that opening the Control Panel took almost a minute. While I don't have the fastest computer available, I do expect something better on an Athlon XP 2400 with 1GB of RAM...

I certainly hope MS improves that a lot before the final release - otherwise I'm staying with XP for the time being...

Leskova, that's funny. I haven't had any performance issues (yet). Runs just as good as XP did for me. I have a laptop with a P4 2.8 Ghz, 512 Mb RAM, 28 Gb HDD, and 32 Mb graphics adapter.

I'm keeping it for the time being, but, once it's time to reformat I'll go back to XP simply because I don't want this one to stop once the trial period is over. My next computer will be with Vista retail though.

Vista runs on some configurations with extra debug code active, because these configurations are ones Microsoft hasnt yet been able to test. Thats why it runs like a dog on some systems and not on others.

It will be removed in the final edition, just remember that you are running a public beta, designed for testing only.

That's more or less what I was guessing anyhow, since the "Update Advisor" (or whatever that program is called that you can check your system with prior to installing Vista) seemed not to like some of the USB devices that I have attached to my system.

But as I said above, I liked the first impression of the "look and feel" - then again, I'm not really unhappy with XP, so I guess I'll just wait until I, for whatever reason, need Vista... after all... some of the applications I need for work still are DOS based...  Wink
