Insomnia

I suffer with chronic insomnia. I can't sleep, no matter how tired I am, I've been given pills, purposefully getting tired, Kept my room cold, the whole set of remedies out there. Is there anything else I can do? My work has declined in quality and I'm tired all day. It sucks!

We bought an air purifier for my wife's allergies. I've found the "white" noise very soothing and can hardly sleep without it now. It drowns-out those little noises that used to keep me awake.

The one we bought is an IQAir from Switzerland, not one of those $50 jobs from Wal-Mart.

Do you consume vast quantities of caffeine? (Coffee, tea, cola drinks?)
If so, switch to decaf.

Avoid Tea/Coffee.Try Warm Milk.Exercise.Read a book.Try not to think too much.

Well, Martin, There are a few things to say here:

First of all, the insomnia can be related to your past medical history - not only the recent one, if I recall correctly... There are specific medications to be used if that is the case...

Or it can be a symptom of Depression. Most depressive patients have insomnia and sleepiness during the day. That is a rather common symptom.

I would recommend to you to set up an appointment in a sleeping center (clinic) in which you will stay 1 or 2 nights connected to an EEG / ECG system which will analyze your sleep quantity and quality. From those results an appropriate therapy can be established.

Do not take these symptoms lightly. Sleep disorders are indeed associated with increased risk for infarcts, Strokes, high blood pressure and much more.

I does suck. I have it and insomnia doesn't necessarily mean you sleep less, but I can't go to sleep until 4-5 AM however early I try to go to bed then I wake up at 1-3pm in the morning feeling terrible as if I have a hangover (even though I don't). I usually miss lots of college and people think it's fine to just say it's because "I'm lazy". They need to be inside my body for a week and see what it's really like.

Have you ever consult a physician in this regard?

Never ever take any drug unless prescribed.

Try to do some exercise and take a hot shower before bed time.

I find that my ipod helps me to fall asleep. I have created a playlist with light classical music. Turn on the ipod...launch the playlist...and I am off catching sleep in no time. I will usually wake in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and i will put the ipod away then.

I feel tired all the time and feel jet lagged too, but I'd always put it down to working shifts, and a combinations of earlies, lates, day and night shifts so no set shift patterns.

In my ATPL studies, I was reading about Circadiun Rythums, and as I'm all over the place with my shifts, my body must be confused as hell as I have no set pattern that normal M-F 9-5 workers have.

However, just recently I have begun to think that it can't just be this, as my co-workers don't seem to be as tired as I am.

I have been to a Doctor, (I also get backache too especially while sleeping) who said it was Stress and there is nothing more they can do - I'm the leased stressed person I know !!!.

Has the doctor considered the possibility of sleep apnoea? Constant tiredness is one of many symptoms of sleep apnoea. I would suggest that you check it out.

Without being rude - i find the best cure for insomnia is to roll over and shag the Mrs. Feel extremely tired and sleepy immediately afterwards. Dunno why but it works.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Your story sounds awful familiar (except I would drag myself to class no matter how tired I was). Even when my mother was pregnant with me I would keep her up all night. The best thing that ever happened to my insomnia was the 9-5 work life, I can usually manage to fall asleep by 1:30 am. I used to work 8-5, and for whatever reason the hour difference in sleep made a huge difference for me. What you describe are my natural sleep tendencies, and if I allow myself to sleep in on weekends I fall right back into them. I think I'm meant to work graveyard shift or something. I've tried the pills, they'll knock you out for a night but they aren't a long term solution.
The worst thing about insomnia is trying to decide which infomercial you want to watch!

This is the best advice for most things, thinking causes a great many problems and when i had insomnia problems it was learning to turn off the brain that cracked it.

I had a different sleep disorder recently which meant i would wake up suddenly the instant i fell asleep...you have my sympathies.

A walk before bed can work well, any physical exercise (including shagging) is good, Horlicks is very good too.

Trying to stay awake can be a very efficient way of falling asleep!!

My Granny (who lived to be 101) reckoned a shot of brandy before bed cured everything....tequila is not so good as it gives you wierd dreams  Smile

If all else fails...try watching "The English Patient"...works for me!

Fortunately, I do not drink any beverage containing caffeine. I can't stand coffee and I don't like Cola drinks, but I do drink tea, but not before bedtime

Yours is great advice. When I turn off the lights, I find myself starting to think about next day's to do list or how did I perform at my work today. Exercise I read that it increases the level of Oxygen in the body, so it's not recommended before bed. I pick a boring book. And I feel sleepy after three pages, but then I hit the lights and bum!! awake. I will try very hard not to think too much.

I have given thought to that. My recent medical history and the PAST. Right know I take 20mg of Clonazepam "Rivotril" (prescribed) but it relaxes me, does not put me to sleep. I have explored the possibility of my past medical history and It could very well be that. I know the risks, also I am well aware that a sleepy driver is as dangerous as a drunk one. Going to a sleep lab is a good idea. It had not ocurred to me. If I still have problems I will sart doing research about a good one here in MTY.

I've gone that route and it puts me to sleep every time. Unfortunately I cannot do it everyday or I'll need a liver transplant in a couple of years. Also, the hangover is just horrible. I'm not in my teens any more.

No. I believe I am too young and fit too have sleep apnoea. And that condition wakes you up or impedes good sleep. My problem is I simply can't sleep

It's horrible. The hours go by and I see my nightstand watch as it gets close and close to my wake up time. I start thinking, well, now I have 7 hrs, now 5, now 4 now 3 and I panick knowing I'll go to the office and will not be able to keep my eyes open in meetings

Anyhow, Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I will try to "not think too much", putting my mind in some sort of wite screen with no images whatsoever. I also have another problem. If and when I fall asleep, sometimes I suffer from sonambulism. So every door in the house is now locked. But this happens rarely, fortunately.

Hey, Martin, I do not mean to bring about bad news and being pessimistic, but this also fits well with the depression + past medical history problems.

I would still recommend you look for a sleeping lab now. Clonazepan is not actually the best drug for these symptoms, and may actually worsen your somnambulism.

Shifts will do that to you - I once had sleeping problems when I was doing National Service, working shifts in the signal office, to the medic gave me what boils down to uppers and downers - Reactivan was the uppers, which was great - real Australian Zoom pills, I could work 7 teleprinters at once, I was like a one-armed paper-hanger, just a blur round the office, and I had red ones to help me go to sleep after my shift was over. After about a week, I didn't know if it was Saturday or Michaelmas Tuesday, my head was completely f***ed - I had to stop - just learned to manage without.

If you're looking for a non-narcotic sleep-aid, may I recommend the Oxford Illustrated History of Philosophy, which has to be the world's most boring book. I don't know what possessed me to buy it, probably I wasn't keeping up with my book club minimum purchasing. Seriously, a page or two and I'm out like a light.
