As a fan of boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA), it annoys me no end that finding any fights on free television is getting next to impossible. The only real exception is the Friday Night Fights show on ESPN2, featuring mainly non-champsionship fights. It's often pre-empted for something else. ESPN2 also will on rare occasions take a break from its usual fare of poker tournaments (query: since when did a card game become a sport?) to show K-1 bouts. And the loathesome Spike TV network will occasionally show past UFC matches, but they're so littered with commercials as to be almost unwatchable.
As for the rest, it's basically pay TV or nothing. HBO and Showtime have pretty much locked up boxing, and sometimes charge additional amounts for really major fights. UFC and Pride Fighting fare even worse, being cast into the pay-per-view ghetto.
With so many major sports being available on free television, why is boxing and MMA treated differently?
