15-year-old Banned From Exams Because Of Haircut

Sat Jun 10, 2006 9:25 pm

How times change! Apparently there are other kids in his class with long hair, which isn't a problem.

Half of his contemporaries have the same haircut, so what's the school's problem?

Sorry, Airbus A346, but basically a furore has erupted over the decision of the principal of Tullamore College, Co Offaly, to exclude three students from the exam hall because of their blade-one cut.

Two students agreed to transfer to another school six miles away, but Enda Carroll (in pic) has refused, saying he is planning to stay at home for the rest of the exams and repeat the Junior Cert elsewhere next year.

Tullamore school principal is opening a special examination centre in Tullamore to cater for the students, but Enda has refused saying he wants to take the exams in his own school. His mother supports him fully and doesn't want him to be "treated like a leper".

What's wrong with his haircut?

The Headteacher at my school has clamped down on hair as well, she was even having a cry when people put red hair spray in their hair on red nose day.

lots of schools have stuff about hair and hair cuts in their uniform policy! its like wearing a blazer or tie!

i remember at my old school we werent aloud hair gel!

if we came in with it in our hair, they would make us wash it out in the classroom sink!

It's insane at our school, the haircut polocy is so strict. One of my friends was put in "isolation" (Not being allowed to classes or lunch/break) for 3 weeks before his hair was the right length.

I've been told to have my hair cut a few times and it's only just been over my ears. It isn't rare to see people excluded for having too long or too short hair! It's pathetic!

Does that particular hair cut mean something? In Rochester it doesn't mean anything to have short hair. Very few kids go to skin , but if they do it doesn't mean their skinheads or anything. It usually means they're swimmers. I'm just wondering why the school would have a problem with that particular haircut.

First off, is this a public school? Secondly, is there a specific dress code that addressed haircuts? If there is, I don't see a problem with it.

I keep my hair very short; low maintenance. Besides, I'm one of the few guys that looks pretty good with a shaved head.

My school seems to have a few screws loose too... it allows male students to wear hair as long as they want, but does not allow blade 1 or 2 haircuts because they look "thuggish". So, its OK to look like a hippie but don't wear your hair short?

Would someone from Ireland or the UK please tell me what's wrong with his hair? Is there some offensive pattern shaved into the back of his head that we're not seeing? His hair looks like that of 75% of the kids here.

Seemingly the school has a policy of no "blade-one" haircuts. It seems all the more incredible that the cut is actually neat and clean. I could understand it if he had dreadlocks and didn't wash them, or if it was long and scruffy, but this cut, as you say, is very popular with kids his age. The airwaves were alive over the last week with this story: it made the front page in all the newspapers and was featured on TV and radio news bulletins, and 90% of people phoning-in to radio stations couldn't understand the fuss over what people considered to be a neat haircut.

The Department of Education were asked to comment and they, not surprisingly, came down on the side of the school, saying rules were rules, but they did look for a compromise, which forced the school to provide a separate room for the kid and his two buddies who had the same haircut. His buddies went for that option, but Enda refused, and had the full backing of his mother.

The most hilarious thing about all this was that the school principal, who banned the kids in the first place, wears a moustache. Maybe he's the one who should be banned!

When the barber uses a No 1 blade (the lowest is zero), so it's the second shortest cut you can get. Clearly the kid only has this on the back and sides.

Our school had a strict policy on hair cuts, although we were allowed to use gel.
It couldnt be a number 2 i believe or under that all over, or dyed with any weird colour. They sometimes let you get away with bleaching it blonde for some reason though, or blonde streaks.

The reason behind this is 'distraction' apparently, as it will cause other pupils to react to it and distract them from work, or even copy it.

We couldnt wear ear rings for girls or lads (if that was your thing, only studs were allowed) 1 stud for boys, 2 for girls. no jewellry like rings etc was allowed.

Blazers must be kept on at all times, unless permission was given to take it off on a hot day, or unless you asked permission from the teacher in class.
Load of B.S really, but it did everyone good in the long run.

This was a public school too, most try clamp down on the discipline part, but sadly the 'chavs' in school now, continue to disobay, suffering consequences that other kids who actually comply with the teachers suffer for too.

Well, then if the school had a rule against it, and the kid was warned, then I don't have a problem with it, it's his fault.

Harry

Hopefully this debate will prompt schools to dump pedantic rules which don't have any bearing on a child's education. This case was plastered all over the news media here last week (a welcome diversion from the World Cup), much to the embarrassment of the school and principal, who had to back down anyway by being told to compromise.

It's ironic that, 30 years ago, had the kid had a haircut OTHER than the one he now has, he probably would have been banned.
