Iran World Cup Game Pre-Empted By Christian Show

Mon Jun 12, 2006 2:10 am

The first half (and both goals as of this post) of the Iran vs. Mexico game was used instead for a Christian televangelist show here in San Antonio. When you consider just how many local residents are likely to be interested in seeing Mexico's game, you really have to wonder why they would do something like this. This is yet another of those events that gives me reason to call 'red America' Jesusland.

Red America is too religious as it is, and here in the red states it's rather annoying for non-religious folks like myself. Why would ABC allow a Christian propaganda hour to pre-empt a national broadcast? Aren't they supposed to be part of the massive 'liberal media?' I guess this is yet another example that the American media aren't all that liberal after all?

Relax. I feel your pain. Watch it on Univision instead if you have cable. You don't have to understand Spanish to enjoy it. Football is a worldwide language.

This happens quite often when soccer is on the schedule. In one instance, the MLS Cup was pre-empted for the Southern Football Coaches Show in Savannah, GA one year. FWIW pre-empting comes in all shapes and forms, it's not only to show religious programming.

Before you use sports as a platform for your little tirade, why don't you inform yourself about what exactly happened (pre-empting, or as the response below explains, an infomercial of sorts) instead of assuming that it's because you live in Texas.

The televangelist shows are normally paid programs, kind of like an infomercial. If the contract says it shows at x time each week then that's exactly what will happen. If you want WC here in the US you need cable or satellite.

You just answered your own question:

I live in Jesusland.

If your local ABC station believes its viewers are more interested in practicing their religion from home on the sabbath than watching a game that most of them probably won't care about anyway (Mexico vs. Iran??), then common sense says they're gonna cater to their audience...It's their perogative to tune out from the national broadcast.

Besides, you could have easily had just gone to your local satellite-equipped sports bar  Wink

(PS- As a fellow red state resident, I had no problem whatsoever viewing the first half on the local ABC outlet, so your knee-jerk red-state over-generalization is off the mark yet again  Yeah sure )

Here in blue state Wisconsin the game was shown in its entirety, without interruption. However if Brett Favre had so much as farted the local ABC shop would have dumped out of their WC coverage faster than you can say deep-fried cheese curds!

They cater to their audience. It's not a propaganda thing, if ABC believes that people in that area would prefer to watch the religious programming then that is what they'll show, if they realize the ratings are terrible for that hour then they will change it next time. ABC's only agenda is to get money from advertisers and to make money.

Well, that's what you get for living in a religious area.

As for me, I saw the game in it's full, glorious HD entirety.  cool

Was it by John Hagee? Isn't he based in San Antonio?

I saw a commercial for his new book on Fox News last night...It's called "Jerusalem Countdown" and is all about the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran in biblical prophecy.

I know where you're going with this, but that's at a consequence of misinterpreting my point. My point wasn't that I thought not enough people in San Antonio cared about the game to air the first half of it, my point was that it's the station's perogative to determine whether or not this is the case...They did in fact pre-emt the first half of the game, didn't they?  Silly

The name of the show was just "First Baptist Church" according to the digital guide on Time Warner. All the description says is "Religious church service."

Quoting KFLLCFII (Reply 11):

The Mexico game was on Univision, a network I'm sure most Mexicans would be most comfortable with anyway so it wasn't a total waste that KSAT (the local ABC affiliate) pre-empted the first half. Univision is an open air network these days so even if one doesn't have cable, they could still had watched it.

But it would be nice,if the Spanish stations, like the English stations,to offer

SATX, I'm surprised you even watch TV since it uses electricity which causes greenhouse gasses through its generation. If you don't like the programming set up by your local station then feel free to apply for the job if you know the role so much better. Until then, suck it up and go watch cable instead.

Is there any chance of a USA-Iran game other than in the WC other the a semi-final or final?

Odd that an ABC station would do that. Here, both ABC stations that we recieve, KABC Los Angeles and KEYT Santa Barbara, showed the match in its (sad) entirety.

For obvious reasons, so am I, but they are most likely going to have to beat Portugal to make it through.

Actually one of his broadcasts was on China -- but it was delayed, I think they said it was Good Friday services. But exactly how is 'nuclear armament' a technology developed in 1940s covered by the Bible. Must be in the new-new testament. And Iran didn't exist as an identity in Biblical times. I know people lived in what is Iran, but they weren't Muslim yet -- that took another 700-1000 years depending if you're talking new or old testament.

Yes, but they wouldn't show that type of "infomercial" if the area wasn't religious. I certainly don't see those types of shows on the broadcast networks in my neck of the woods.

Depends on what you mean by "religious". People around here certainly go to church and they also buy a ton of cheesy Christian merchandise. If you think 'sex sells' then you won't believe what salvation sells! We seem to get an awful lot of the "Don't fuck with my personal definition of marriage" religious crowd but rather few of the "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" folks. That probably has a lot to do with my current view of relgion.

It's unfortunate that these people shape your view of religion, since you are surrounded by deep-south Baptist Evangelicals. Can be a crazy bunch sometimes.

I am surrounded by them to and I cant stand them. Their always damning everyone to Hell, trying to convert everyone, and shoving their beliefs down everyones throat. They need to worry more about themselves than others. They cant stand Anglo-Catholics like myself, I even have family members that say I am going to burn in Hell for being Episcopalian.
