Should be interesting to see one of those get hit by a Hummer.

Accidents happen, and even if they are "lacking," they at least won't be lacking their lives after the accident.

I see this going the way of the XFL and US Soccer.

Although I'm anti-SUV in a general way, I wouldn't advocate going the opposite way and getting a Weeble-mobile. Any car whose spares are made by Playmobil is best avoided.

No doubt in the US you'll get dipshits who believe the hype and park the damn thing end on in a parallel parking space, blocking the road. ASSSHOOLLLLLEESSS !!!

At a building that has the offices of a major advertizing agency, they have several 'Smart' cars on display. They defentialy get some attention. Problem is they would get lost in some of our NY City potholes  biggrin  So I am not sure how well they would work out. For the same amount of money, you could buy a very small but still larger car like a Toyota Yaris, or Kia/Hundai

If taken properly, according to what I read on this site, in addition to numerous articles circulating the web, the pills shouldn't of had the effect on Kennedy as they did. Alcohol was most certainly present in his system with the medicine.

It's well documented and noted that Capitol PD keep congressional run-ins on the down-low and go "way out of their way" to take care of any congressman suspected of DUI or DWI. I've read a few stories of Capitol PD giving rides home to drunk Congressman on both sides of the isle.  drunk

Not the best by any means, but not bad for a car of its size.

Nooooooooooooooo!! I hate those ugly little go-carts. Make them stay on the sidewalk with the golf carts and other vehicles that aren't road worthy.  silly

Seriously, though, we don't need them. Gas mileage is one thing, but those cars are made for parking sideways in cities like Rome where everyone just parks as they please all over both sides of the damned road. With very few exceptions we don't have that problem here. We will have a new problem, though: Pickup truck vs. dumb car accidents.

I read on an article on this yesterday. Currently Mercedes is operating at a loss on these Smart Cars and they have no way right now to manufacture them and make them profitable while still being cost effective. As it is now, for around the same price as a smart car, people can get a compact car that has a back seat and even 4 doors. I'd rather drive a Neon and have more room than have a Smart Car and look like a complete Douche Bag. If they end up hitting the U.S. Market, they will be a short lived fad. Euro-trash wannabe LHMark wants one...but he'd never be able to squeeze his ass into one. Look, they're already down a customer.

Its because Mercedes has one distinct line for these cars that share very vew parts or process' as their other lines. Add in a demand that exists but not in a large number, and thats why there is a high cost for one of these shit boxes (12 grand), and why Mercedes has lost billions on this already.

As a owner of a American Build V8 SUV and a Smart for in the city, I must say I feel just as safe in the Smart 'cage' as in the SUV. For all you people being anti Smart, just get the facts straight and watch this 70 MPH crash.

Whatever your opinion of them, they are light years ahead of any American car in terms of engineering. As dinky as it may look, you can't beat it's economics. They are quite common here in Canada and I'd much rather see a Smart than some piece of shit American SUV.

And as Lijnden pointed out, the Smart car is actually very safe thanks to something called engineering which seems to be lacking in most American cars.

Of couse the SUV fans will just say they don't care what scientist with crash test labs and highly sophisicated equiptment find, they'll just continue on that Smart owners are stupid to drive such a small vehicle because if some pencil dick in his Hummer hits them they're surely to die  Yeah sure

It's more like common sense. Big fucking car hits little dinky car. You dont need science to determine the outcome, and I don't give a shit how much those score on some crash tests.

What I was getting at, is not that the car isn't suited for the city. For city driving and especially Manhattan traffic, it's perfect. What I was getting at though, is that to ban all other traffic would lead to the cities demise. Do I live there? No. But I am there 2 or 3 times a month with a tractor trailer delivering fresh meat.

For those of you who have had the frustrations of dealing with Times Square, or Columbus Traffic Circle, try it in a tractor trailer...

We're talking about commuter and residential traffic. New York streets weren't designed for Hummers, nor does anyone need anything like that to get around Manhattan... actually, you don't need anything other than a cab, bus or subway to get ANYWHERE on Manhattan.

My bad, I misunderstood. As for the SUV's, and others tooling through Manhattan, I'd totally agree. Granted, in the truck I don't make the best of progress through midtown, but when I'm being passed by pedestrians, and they're making better time on the sidewalks than I do on the road, it makes you wonder why more people don't use the subway or buses. Must be the American love affair with the automobile.

A sensible solution might be to adopt the "total flex" standard which a lot of Brazilian auto manufacturers (the local Volkswagen branch, for example) are using. These cars can run on either conventional gasoline or ethanol.

I don't know the technical details, but the car I drive here is "total flex" and is the Brazilian variant of the VW Fox.

A dealer in Reno is offering something called a Zap car, which is imported as a Smart and then modified to meet U.S. federal government requirements. Not cheap, though... about $25,000. You could buy a top-of-the-line Civic or Corolla for that much and have a real car with four seats and a trunk.
