And The Best Place To Live Is . . .

Thu Jun 15, 2006 8:45 am

Seeing that everyone else is getting in on the act, I came across this tonight and couldn't resist.

http://www.economist.com/theworldin/...yStory.cfm?story_id=3372495&d=2005

Okay, it's a year old, but I don't think much has changed. And I couldn't find data for 2006.

Yes, I've heard about this. Switzerland was on top for the longest time, but were ousted from that spot (IIRC) last year thanks to Ireland's booming economy.

Also, when I was in Ireland, I was pretty amazed at the number of extremely attractive women I came in contact with; not just in dublin, but pretty much everywhere i went (Dublin, Westport, Co. Donegal).

I live in Northern Ireland. Ireland rocks. We go for holidays in Donegal every year and never get bored (all we ever do is go fishing, enjoy the great weather  Smile, and eat scampi and chips, yum).

Ive always wanted to live in Ireland at Christmas time and have it snow on Christmas morning....just like that great Guinness advert shown at Christmas time!!

Also I compete in swimming galas in Ireland aswell and all irish swimmers rock!

So i guess Ireland would be a great place to live!

Big up to Ireland  bigthumbsup

The main argument in the other threads has been that he is showing off about his country. Here, he is congratulating Ireland on a job well done and admiting that his country could learn something from it. Even though you mean this as a joke (I hope!), why would you want to start something?

As far as I remember, he started a post, obviously based on whatever statistics he came across, which stated that Qatar was or will be the richest country in the world per head of population.

If the stats are correct, what's wrong with that? If you have problems with that statement, prove otherwise instead of trading insults.

Best place to live my ass.

Positive points are that my paycheck is bigger/taxes lower than in my native country, the people are nice and the Gardai don't hand out tickets when you don't wear seatbelts.

Other than that it's a balmy 16 degrees this morning, the biggest supermarket in the country is the size of the smallest in my former town of 25.000 souls, potholes in roads resemble moon craters, the airport is a third-world farce, public transport is overpriced and underperforming, only one outdoor basketball court in the whole downtown area, etc...

And don't get me started on Rip-Off Ireland.

Wow, interesting read Braybuddy. It's funny, I left Ireland back in 93 when we were still being educated toe be exported. Incredible the way things have changed.

I am surprised to see France so low down. I wonder does this survey really consider health-care, much prefer the French system to the Irish one which is disastrous to say the least. I'd also consider Ireland to be quite a violent country, always amazes me when I'm back home to turn on the radio every morning at hear about the latest "city murder last night", "stabbing", etc.

Apart from that, to be honest, I think Ireland is a great place, and if we could just move it a bit further south to improve the climate I'd certainly rank it at the top. If my wife wasn't so put off by the climate, I don't think I'd mind returning home, but then I wonder is that just me seeing Ireland through the eyes of an ex-pat...

Nevertheless, Ireland is indeed a great country, the recent progress is astounding and I think Irish people have every reason to be proud to be Irish seeing what has been achieved in the recent past.

Can't disagree with you there, Toulouse, as the public health service here leaves a lot to be desired. France has indeed the best public health service in the EU (and probably the world) and this doesn't seem to be taken into account in this survey. If you click on the link you'll get more details, but under "Heatlh", all that seems to be measured is life expectancy at birth.

I wouldn't say the country is any more violent than most western European nations. The RTE newsdesk is notoriously parochial and more inclined to report on a stabbing in Tallaght than a coup in South America, so you might be getting a slightly skewed picture when you hear the news here. Most of the stabbings and murders are gang- and drug-related and are confined to certain areas and people. I often walk all over Dublin city centre late at night on my own and never see anything worse than teenagers (and people old enough to know better) puking their guts up on the pavement. That said, there are certain individuals who, like everywhere else, prey on tourists, so I always warn any visitors to be careful.

And I couldn't agree with you more on your other point: even ONE extra month of summer and one less of winter would be perfection!

Yeah, I suppose you're right there. I suppose it's still the "small town/country" thing in Ireland. Here in France when I listen to the news you hear little over murders, stabbings, etc., except anything involving children which does get a lot of coverage. Then when I pick up the local newspaper, well there you do see little articles about murders/stabbings etc. I also must say, I have never felt anymore at risk walking around Dublin than anywhere else in Europe.

In France, I pay my publish social insurance "right" and am covered by the private insurance provided by my wife's employer (I freelance), and so far when I go to the dentits, I don't pay a euro, when I get medicine on prescription, it's free, when I go to the GP, I pay €20 and that is reimbursed within a month, no paperwork involved, the GP just swipes my card and money is sent straight to my bank account. Anyway, I think we're also referring to the quality of the healthcare system, which is excellent here in France, estimated by most as one of the best if not the best in the world. In Ireland, the public health service is to say the least a little dodgey.
