Poland: Road From Cracow To Tarnow And Rzeszow

Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:52 pm

Last week I had to use Route #4 in Poland from Cracow (KRK) driving east in direction of Tarnow/Rzeszow (and further southeast) twice and I was quite annoyed by the number of construction zones currently on the road in the stretch between Wielicka and Bochina.

Question: Does anybody know, for how long these construction zones are scheduled to be present ?
In some recent maps, there is an extension of motorway A4 to the East projected with a completion date of "2008" for the immediate stretch of miles running around Wielicka. Has anybody information about the state of this construction ?

The current situation makes travel along that route a bit of gamble if one has to catch a flight out of KRK. In my case we had to catch a 1430h departure out of KRK for which we set off from downtown Przemysl before 0800h. That´s a 260 km drive which I completed in 4.5 hours (with only one minor break) but only by adapting my driving style to the local one (speeding excessively, overtaking whenever possible - explanation only, no blame intended) …

A long time probably, Polish roads are always in a bad state and construction is damn slow.

Some info on it:

This is why I love the USA when it comes to long drives, it is the best country for this kind of driving without a doubt. 260km is around a 180 miles, Easily doable on US roads in 2hrs15mins without getting a ticket on the interstates. Anyways, Yes I do love the Polish driving style. Pisses me off when I drive in Poland for a month or two and then I have to drive in the USA.

People here honk, and look at your like your nuts if you pass on a one lane road.

Thanks for the info and the URLs !
Very interesting and also handy in my future travel planning.

It had taken some people we met in Przemysl 16 hours to complete the 1063km (660mi)-drive from Wolfenbuettel (near Braunschweig aka. Brunswig, Northern Germany) to Przemysl, while they were navigating through the construction zone of highway #4 in the less busy late evening.

That's why I prefer to fly to destinations that far away ...  Wink

I second this, but only as long as one stays clear of some of the big metro areas ...
