Evita Peron: What Do You Think Of Her?

Thu Jun 15, 2006 10:55 pm

I was recently in Buenos Aires, and it is of course impossible to visit that city and not come across something related to one of its best known celebrities, Evita Peron. I don't know much about her but I was curious to find out what everyone else thought about her? Do Argentines still venerate her like a saint? Is she the original Hillary Clinton? Or the original Winnie Mandela?

Boy do I get scolded by US.netters when I generalize about something related to their country.

So I'll be kinder with you  Smile

Evita is far from being venerated in Argentina. As in any democracy, there are two major camps: one that adores her, another that call her something else and not exactly a saint! And then many other opinions in between. And this is even as she died young which creates some charisma and sympathy.

Sorry Evita fans, IMHO she was the whore of Argentina, who became a saint in the eyes of the poor.

She & Peron did nothing but bring a rich republic to its knees.

During the 80's I was a huge fan of the Musical (still am) and read every book I could find on her...pro and con, and sorry the cons are a lot worse then the good she brought to the Argentine.

She may have been the prototype for the modern US Democrat. Make a few showy gestures for a tiny percentage of certain disadvantaged groups of people, actually changing nothing, and reap gigantic personal gains in so doing.

True enough, but no one can deny she was excellent in convincing people of her assumed intents and turning their support in her favour. What she did with the syndicates was classic. Peron and her were, to me, the personification of Populism. And I think everyone will agree that she did get what she wanted, regardless of the means for it.

Not that this was necessarily a good thing, though...

Well that's a very BIG percentage of disadvantaged people in Latin America but one of the main reasons they are that way is because they vote for people like that. But it does sound about right for every Populist Latin American leader there ever was....

You couldn't have put it better.

Eva Peron was a puppet of her husband, who used her charisma and people skills to ram through his agenda. In their defense, I will say that the Peronists tried and accomplished a bit of regional development in Argentina and income distribution. Before, almost everything was in Buenos Aires and the ginny index was horrid. She did good things badly and a lot of questionable things.

And please, the musical is a work of fiction. It takes huge liberties from the real story. Don't use it as a reference for history of Argentina and specially about the Peron years. There are much more serious works done by reputable researchers of both camps.

Shortly after the musical came out, I thought it was based on Peron's third wife (and they'd just changed the name to protect the innocent), but then I got to the theatre in London and started to read the programme, and found it was about someone I knew nothing about. I read the story of Eva's life, then the curtain raised with the opening scene announcing her death, and I was just consumed with the drama of it all.

Well put.

Hillary probably worships at Evita's feet....I'm sure there's a role model relationship there.

Well, I think she had to let it happen...
She had to change.
Couldn't stay all her life down that hill
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So she chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed her at all...
She never expected it to.

Don't cry for her Argentina
The truth is, she never left you.
All through her wild days, her mad existence
She kept her promise
Don't keep your distance...

BTW, Eva Peron's Maserati was for sale on eBay a couple of months ago. Anyone know what it fetched?

Hmmm...don't know much about her. Wasn't she some kind of glorified prozzy?
