How Do You Like Your Hot Dogs?

Fri Jun 16, 2006 12:30 pm

Alright, save the signed by posts, it's too flippin' obvious.

With summer weather coming into full swing, and despite my usual posting of tasty recipes, the great AMerican hot dog is something that can't be beat under certain circumstance, of course. So, tell us how you like your dogs (and brats, if you must).

For me, it's a boiled hot dog (I've got a nice package of Grote and Weigel beef franks in my fridge now - fairly low sodium) with a steamed bun. For toppings: sweet pickle relish (on the dog), hot Mr. Mustard (on the bun - sounds like a Beatles song), a bit of creamed horseradish (on the other inside of the bun) and raw, white, finely-diced onion (on top of the relish, but smooshed down a bit). These things must be done just so.

Serve with Friend's baked beans (lowest sodium out there), potato salad, and copious amounts of cold beer.

BTW, Hebrew National and Kahn's make a good dog as well. And grilled hot dogs suck, IMO.

I prefer the Danish variant, although I can't even recall the last time I had one... not the worst idea, though.

Although I live boiled the best, nothing beats a grilled dog on a warm summer night. And only mustard for me.

MMMhmm. We got these on sale at work. Natrual Casing or Skinless, 3.49 a pound, which is about 8-9 for skinless and 6-7 for casings... Boy do these bad boys taste good on a toasted bun.

The thick juicy kosher beef doggies with plenty of spicey mustard, relish, good deli style hot dog rolls. You making me hungry at 2354 hours EST!

I'll take my kosher barkers either real well done bar be qued, or boiled and of course baloney around it.  bigthumbsup

I've always had a thing for both Kasper's and Casper's dawgs with white onion, tomato, relish, mustard and salt (that's a classic dawg to me), and the chili dawgs at Doggie Diner with ballpark mustard (ooooooh, baby!), but when I was in NY over the winter I got introduced to Papaya King (OOOOOH, BABY!).

Nice and crunchy dawgs, grilled well-done, spicy brown mustard and kraut.  yummy

New Jersey Texas Weiner style. That is a deep fried hot dog, in a soft warm bun, with chopped raw onion, and a tomato, meat and onions (and chilli spice) sauce. These are especially popular in the Paterson area where I live.

Boiled dogs are great for any time but summer time. For summer time, nothing beats a dog done up on a charcoal grill, browned, slightly crusted and piping hot. Add spicy mustard and a toasted bun and you've got a damned good dog.

The Lehigh Valley isn't lacking for hot dog joints, but my personal favorite for many reasons is Yocco's, especially at the Great Allentown Fair. There's something about walking around the fairgrounds with an "up" (everything hot dog--spicy mustard, chopped onions, Yocco's chili sauce) that just says "summer" to me.

For me, mustard and onions only. On rare occaisions, chili. And not on any hot dog you buy at the grocery store down here, only the "tough skins" my mother-n-law has shipped down to her a few times a year. They come from a place in Fall River Mass. I don't know the name of it, but we go there everytime we're up that way, and haul back a couple coolers full of stuff from that store you just can't get anywhere else. I'd list some of it here, but I can't even pronounce some of it properly, much less try to spell it....  Big grin

Baltimore Dog — Deep fried dog, melted cheddar cheese & grilled onion
New York Dog — Sauerkraut and brown mustard
Chicago Dog — Mustard, relish, onion, sport peppers, tomato, pickle and celery salt
Buffalo Dog — Buffalo sauce, blue cheese & celery salt

Those are my favorites, in that order.... I get those at America's Dog at the Navy Pier in Chicago.... hadn't had a Baltimore Dog before, but d*** they're good.

I'm not big on hot dogs unless at a baseball game. Best hotdog ever was at Dodger Stadium - a Jumbo Dodger Dog. If I have to eat a hot dog outside the park, I prefer them boiled with ketchup, mustard and hot sauce. Not a fan of thick skins on them, but I do like grilled Zweigels hots here on Rochester. If you're a Crapchestarian and you don't like Zweigels...you might as well be a terrorist.
