Tiger Stadium Demolition SET For Fall

Fri Jun 16, 2006 9:03 pm

Finnaly! Why did the Tigers move to Comerica Park if they were going to keep this eyesore!

"After years of debate and false hopes, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has decided to raze Tiger Stadium, the historic but decaying home of Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg and the 1984 World Series champion Tigers.

In its place, Kilpatrick envisions a ring of retail shops and residential housing surrounding the historic playing field, which will be preserved as a nonprofit park and ball diamond.

The mayor said his conceptual plan, revealed in detail to the Free Press on Thursday, is the best chance to boost the outlook for the Corktown neighborhood and to save and celebrate one of America's most famous baseball fields."

I didn't hear a word about this "on the street" when I visited DTW a couple weeks ago. But, after reading the article, the plan seems vaguely familiar. Like it's basically a rehash of some of some of the past proposals over the final years of my residency.

Far be it from me to even suggest that with the city and the mayor controlling the reins, successful project completion without massive boondoggle and waste will probably not be possible, but that's my gut feeling. Perhaps they should appoint a no-nonsense businessman (dare I suggest Penske or Karmanos) to oversee the project and make sure the business community and not the political community guarantees success. In any event, I hope the project works, and once completed it doesn't turn into another taxpayer ripoff. Regards...jack

Maybe they can get IKEA to open a store on this location?

Just like Bloomington, MN did on the site of the razed Met Center Hockey Arena, former home of the North Stars.

Great, a strip mall in place of a legendary baseball stadium. Perfect. I cannot think of too many cities with a worse mayor (not counting New Orleans) than Detroit. Its too bad.

KROC, what should we do with it? The Tigs needed a new stadium...period.

In every other city, when a new stadium has been built, the old one came down right away.

I think the idea of building retail, housing and saving the "field" is a great idea. For the first time, I'm in agreement with Kwami.

I agree a new stadium was needed. I agree it should have been taken down asap. However having been to DTW several times and being one of the only people around who actually likes the city - I personally think something better could/should be done with the land. I like the idea of preserving the field. I'm even down with making it a new residential area, but adding "retail"? Like there isn't enough retail already. Detroit could use a few more green areas...and I'm not talking about the green that costs 5 of 10 bucks either,

But think of the boom to the economy of Detroit from the businesses in that strip mall. I'm sure places will open to meet the most urgent needs of Detroiters: a check-cashing place, a pawn shop, a laundromat, a mini-mart... it's vital commerce!

New thread title;

Detroit A.Nets Favorite City to Bash

You're right, Detroit sucks in a lot of way, but there is progress being made.

We were stuck with a downtown that our parents generation abandoned and took 40 years to turn into the hell it was. But, there is a lot of new development, housing and growth going on. I go downtown all the time, there are great new restaurants (Small Plates), the Opera House, Comerica Park, Ford Field, and a host of other cool destinations.

For once, can you give the city a chance.

I gave Detroit a chance and I liked it. However, I can still crack on it. Besides, the ride to Commerica Park from the outta 'burbs led us through some pretty shifty areas. And with whiter than white Airlinelover driving the rig...I thought for sure we were gonna get whacked.

They did something along that line in Montreal when the Forum was replaced by the Molson (now Bell) Centre. They gutted it and turned it into an entertainment complex call the Pepsi Forum.

The same fate is occuring with historic Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto as well, Loblaw's has bought the building and is in the process of converting the building into a Real Canadian Superstore.
