Don't Like Win Vista Beta? Try This...

Tue Jun 27, 2006 1:10 am

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about Windows Vista BETA. A few people installed it and reaction was mixed. Some of those that didn't like it, including me, liked the interface but didn't like how it hogged system resources.

Well, try this:

http://www.9down.com/story.php?sid=6608

It's a skin for XP that emulates Vista very well. I installed it yesterday and compard it to the Vista installation on my test machine, and it's very close indeed. I think the skin was probably built while Vista was in BETA 1, as there are some small nuances here and there, but this skin gives you 90% of the BETA 2 interface - transparency options, Aero 'glass' emulation, Vista icons, Vista task bar and start menu etc. And it doesn't hog your system resources like BETA 2 does.

You'll need WinRAR or similar to unpack the RAR archive.

It also doesnt do what Beta 2 does, so no surprises there really.

This is like those people that run an OSX theme on Windows - sad wannabes.

But for those who like the Vista interface, it's a decent alternative.

Wannabe what? Spoken like a true MS hater.

(I prefer OSX, by the way).

We're talking about computers here - how "cool" does it get?  Yeah sure

I can't try it here, but I will certainly look into it when I get home. Sounds interesting. I love the look and feel of Vista, but it does suck up resources.

It looks fairly nice. I don't like the transparent feature though, so turned that off.

Nice - might give that a go! Is there any noticeable drop in performance when running the different theme? I can't see why there would be, but you never know!

Not really. That screenshot came from my laptop; Centrino 1.7Ghz, 1GB RAM. Startup take a few seconds longer than it used to, as the Aero effects are achieved with a 3rd party plug-in called 'Glass2k', and it runs in the background. Task Manager shows it at 0% CPU and 4,136k Mem.

On my desktop (P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB RAM), 0% CPU and 4,872k mem. Startup time is hard to guage as I have a bunch of stuff that starts with this machine.

Once the system is up and running, I haven't noticed any drop in performance at all.

Installed it (after a panic with that 'wait 1 minute before cancelling SP2 CD' notification!!!), and my first impression is good, although it has cocked up my tabs in Firefox - they have gone really chunky.

I like the font though!
