Hell's Kitchen - Your Thoughts

Tue Jun 27, 2006 10:52 am

Personally, I love it. Being a chef is a despicably hot, tireless, brutal job. Chef Ramsey is a total prick, as well he should be. Any time I'm in my kitchen, I have the cleaver nearby to ward off intruders. You wanna come in to get a beer or another glass of wine? You'd better announce yourself and be granted access or I cannot be held responsible for my actions.

Your thoughts (other than that I'm a @#$%ing @#$%)?

The show is interesting.

Ramsey is an asshole.

If he talked to me the way he talks to these rookies I'd lay him out.

He is the reason I do NOT watch the show.

Hell's Kitchen - Your Thoughts

Crazy-ass show, but it is oddly enjoyable, in a visceral sort of way. It's like "The Next Food Network Star" meets "Ted or Alive" (Ted Nugent's crazy-ass show on OLN)--without the ATVs.

I prefer the breadknife... With a cleaver, people almost *expect* you to be a "@#$%ing @#$%"--but with a breadknife in hand, it comes as more of a shock and is almost that much more believable and cause for concern...

Not that I've ever tried this out...  innocent

By the way, I'd love to eat in that restaurant--looks like a pretty cool dining experience...

So if you were a head chef for a MAJOR restaurant, you'd just love to have a bunch of incompentent boobs serving food? Dear Lord, Sgt. Major, have you gone soft?

Gotta kick their butts into submission. I'd love to be on that show. I'd be flying around that kitchen.

And this ain't combat we're talking about - its a frackin' restaurant.

Put military combat at the top, police and fire work next, followed by ATC, then you have restauranteuring. Probably the single most likely business venture to fail.

Actually, no. If I screwed up, I'd take it like a man and own it. I just wouldn't screw up like some of these screw-balls.

Edited to add ATC - my bad.

Anyone who has ever worked in a posh restaurant or resort knows that all head chefs are pricks. I was a server in one $40 a plate restaurant and the HC was always yelling at everyone. His staff put up with it but would take it out on his car everyday. Being a server, if he had yelled at me like that I would have retaliated.

I love the show personally. People make a bit much of Ramsey being an ass. If you watch his BBC show you'll see a different side where he goes in and tries to rescue restaurants with problems. He's still pretty crusty but it's a much less confrontational style.

There was a new episode this past weekend with a French restaurant in Scotland that was great. He actually had a bunch of French chefs cooking in the kitchen while wearing kilts. One of the more interesting parts was hearing him tell the owner about how he had made very similar mistakes several years back and had a restaurant fail.

My favorite tonight was seeing the Maitre D' get covered with silly string and also having some fun shooting it. Serving lunch to 100 kids was a pretty cool idea for stirring things up but I definitely feel sorry for the girls who had to clean the mess up.

Indeed, that is a great show. Although I believe in the first series in the UK one of the owners whose restaurant, 'Bonaparte's', ended up going under actually tried to sue GR because any potential customers were put off from eating there by the show  Yeah sure

As you say Gordon is a little abrasive and it makes great TV and unlike others I have seen enough of him on various shows, whether they be 'gameshows' like Hell's Kitchen, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and the myriad of other shows to know he isn't just putting it on. He is wired that way!

For all of his BS. You have to admit, he is a masterful chef and knows his way thru a kitchen. And he did not get to where he is by being a pushover or a quiet subservient helper. He worked his ass off and fought to get to the front.

When I watched the first series of this last year, I wondered if they picked people this dumb on porpoise. But with the second series, it's just showing how frail most people are, and afraid to speak with a reasoned response when the situation calls for it.

I'll be watching until the last drop of blood is let, however.  Wink

First off, you have no idea whether he does or does not. Second, while I thought some of the side dishes in Vegas were truly unique, my steak was just average, and I've done much better myself on numerous occasions. I'm not trying to equate myself with anyone, but I've got to tell it like it is. I just wasn't that impressed.

I remember that one too - the owner had her head well up her ass and the "chef" was the most pathetic idiot imaginable. IIRC, some newspaper in the UK even ended up having to pay him libel damages over this one.

Hells Kitchen is real. It used to be called "Buddies Italian Kitchen" and was owned by this maniac from Brooklyn known as "Moe".

Moe was constantly verbally abusing everyone in the kitchen. He had a permit to carry a concealed weapon until he pulled it on his wife at the resturaunt during their divorce.

He got in a fight with a waiter over a Canole. Moe pinned the waiter to the wall and gouged his eyes because the waiter was going for a knife. This is all happening in the dining room on a saturday night.

Everybody was known as "Moron". I was respected enough to rank as "Moron #2". That was a term of endearment. This guy was a typical angry, Bi-Polar Brooklander that every conversation included phrases like "Forgeddaboudit", "You Moron", "Suckadick" or "kiss my ass"!

He had zero written policies, proceedures or job descriptions. Everyone was expected to know what to do by osmosis. When an employee did what they were last told, the next time Moe saw them doing it he would yell at them "Whatsamadda with You Moron"? Then he'd smack them or at least fake a slap on the head. The guy makes Ramsey look mainstream.

His Main Chef, Marcelo, now works in a new "Bippo de Beppo"? or something like that, in or around the Minneapolis area. If anyone reading this lives in that region, look him up.

You wonder why anyone would work under these conditions? Some were co-dependent on abusive relationships. Others were undocumented workers.

Moe lost the resturaunt due to legal problems and now sells Kirby Vacuums.

Some A.netter in London, Dubai, Tokyo, New York should go and try out Gordon Ramsay's http://www.gordonramsay.com/ to see if its really that good.
If it isn't good then he should shut up for good.

Whats the point screaming and shouting like Skidmarks said making staff terrified?
I wonder what does he feels like if he participated in Hells Kitchen as one of the chefs.

Could he handle all that shouting and the pressure? I don't think so!
I think this wouldn't happen in top class restaurants because good food needs patient and time to prepare.
If you're in a rush preparing stuff like what they do in Hells Kitchen. Mistakes are bound to happen because of the pressure. Everyone who watched Hells Kitchen should know what happened if there is too much pressure put on the chefs!

I love the show.

The thing about Ramsey is that even when he appears to be a royal prick, being rude to his chefs (deservedly) and his customers, you still have to remember he is one of the greatest and most respected chefs in Europe, if not the world. 'Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares' on BBC America is an excellent show as well and shows the more analytical, practical side of him.

But ultimately, there is a lot of camera play going on in Hell's Kitchen. His temper brings in the ratings.

I was pretty funny last night, though, when he called Tom "donut".
