World Cup Quarter Final Predictions

Thu Jun 29, 2006 12:46 am

Only a matter of time before this thread was started up so I thought I would be ahead of the curve. My predictions are as follows;

Germany 2 - Argentina 1
Italy 1 Ukraine 0
France 1 Brazil 2
England 3 Portugal 1
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

All you bunch of gits have been predicting England's demise since the game against Paraguay. Don't start suggesting they'll win now, for God's sake.  grumpy

Exactly - learn from Spain's experience. Nobody gave them a chance at the start of the tournament - pointing out they always go out early. Suddenly they play well, people start saying they could go all the way and what happens ? Knocked out in round 2.....

I shall be refraining from predicting the England game for fear of jinxing them

Honestly, why can't people go back to pointing out how badly England have been playing and say how we're going to get stuffed?

You're not all German agents or something are you? I suspect the hand of arch-deviant Andreas in this.

England will get stuffed. Even without the various people missing from Portugal, they have still looked light years ahead of England in all their games.

England 0 - 3 Portugal.

Sadly.

I feel Italy should advance easily. Germany will have a tussle with ARG but should win. I would love to see France beat Brazil though I don't think it will happen. England and Portugual should be the best game.

Germany 3 - Argentina 1 last minute goal by Germany as Argentina pull out all the stops to try and tie at 2.

Italy 1 - Ukraine 1 Penalties to Ukraine (most boring game in this round)

France 1 - Brazil 2 (3 hit posts to Brazil)

England 2 - Portugal 2 Penalties to England (Major injury to a England player, but tie the game mid second half, victory in penalties)

I thought i'd add a bit more to the "prediction" part of this thread.  Wink

Pfft. It's been a bleedin' miserable party so far anyway, mainly consisting of heads in hands, screaming at the TV as to why in God's name Ferdinand is launching another 80 yard "pass" into the arms of the opposing goalkeeper.

Hard as it might be for the rest of the world to believe, England really can play a lot, lot better than they have done so far.

If England play well they will beat Portugal easily, but what will actually happen is that we will go a goal up early and then spend the rest of the game camped on our own six yard box launching balls into the crowd.

Predictions
Friday:
GER: ARG---2:1....With the German crowd behind them, it may be difficult to beat Germany

ITL:UKR---1:0...I have a feeling the Italians will get another poor call on their side.

Saturday
ENG:POR---2:1..Gerrard will have a great game, and Lamps may finally connect

FRA:BRS---2:0..French will play excellent defence and may make it difficult for the Brasillians to operate. They'll likely attack with the offside trap again, but may be more succesful.

Quoting WrenchBender (Reply 18):
Argentina 2 Germany 1

Brazil 4 France 0
England 1 Portugal 0, (5 red cards, 13 yellow cards)

WrenchBender

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't the game be over if one team is down to 8 man....very likely scenario with 5 red card being given out.

The minimum number of players required is 7 per team (Law 3). It would be a funny game, but it could happen.

My predictions...

GER 1:0 ARG
ITA 0:0 UKR (after Regulation and Extra Time, and 4:5 for the Ukraine after Penalties, does Roberto Baggio's missed penalty in the 94 World Cup final in Pasadena ring a bell?)
ENG 1:0 POR
FRA 1:1 BRA (after Regulation, and 2:1 for France after Extra Time)

It isn't usually completely fabricated with papers like the Sun. There's usually an element of truth behind it, often twisted, often fourth-hand. Besides, if the story was completely true, what would be the big deal about Pauletta saying Robinson's struggled on crosses? Any idiot could tell that.

But it's actually rather surprising for them to be doing the dirty to England's advantage. Usually they go out of their way to stuff up our chances by having a front-page expose on the team just before a key match.

Yes, I have the same impression. Although I'm sure it will be a hell of a hard match for both teams - Germany still has not shown great football, while Argentina will have to cope with the stadium's ambiance and the always-present referee favours, which I am sure will happen.

In a fair world, Argentina would thrash Germany this afternoon. However, unless Argentina play exceptionally well, FIFA will do all in their power to ensure we lose for the following reasons:

1) Germany losing a QF match would be too embarrassing as host nation. They are a good team with some World Cup titles under their belt, so if they go down, they will only do so with all guns blazing.

2) What sells? A European and a South American team in the finals. Proof? 1990 (Germany v. Argentina), 1994 (Brazil v. Italy), 1998 (France v. Brazil), 2002 (Brazil v. Germany). There was also 1978 (Argentina v. Holland) and I don't know how many other occasions. While I would love to see Argentina v. Brazil in the finals, I doubt FIFA would allow it. Mind you, if Argentina were in Group E, F, G or H, I think they would sail through.

3) There have been Argentina v. England games in both of the last World Cups, and the likelihood is that if Argentina win today, they would face England in the SF. Granted, everyone loves those games, but a Germany v. England in Germany 40 years since the English victory might just be more popular. What I will say is that the Germans will be absolutely insufferable if they beat both Argentina AND England.

But my major gripe against Germany this tournament is the fact that not one German player has scored a goal. It sickens me how Podolski and Klose more or less prostituted themselves to their country's sworn enemy, they may as well have sold their souls to the devil. Think where Poland would be if Podolski and Klose played for them. Numerous Poles I have spoken to are equally outraged.

I can only hope that Argentina win the title they so richly deserve, thus far they have played extraordinarily, and of all the remaining countries I cannot think of any that would cherish victory as much as us. Argentina has gone through some very rough times of late, and a World Cup victory would go a long way to killing-off all our crippling self-doubt and sense of failure.

¡¡¡VAMOS ARGENTINA CARAJOOOOOOOO!!!

Saludos,

ZXV
