A Different Type Of Fantasy Baseball Roster

Thu Jun 29, 2006 2:55 am

OK, baseball fans - in part because of my desparation over how badly the Pirates season is (such that I'm ready to buy one of these shirts), I thought I'd bask in the glory days of Pittsburgh's history and I invite you to do the same. Not necessarily Pittsburgh's, but whatever your favorite baseball team is. If you could assemble a fantasy team composed of players that have played for your favorite team in the past, who would be on it?

My lineup for the Buccos

C - Manny Sanguillen
1B - Willie Stargell
2B - Bill Mazeroski
3B - Pie Traynor
SS - Honus Wagner
LF - Ralph Kiner
CF - Andy Van Slyke
RF - Roberto Clemente
P - Wilbur Cooper
South Carolina - too small to be its own country, too big to be a mental asylum.

LA Dodgers (since I began paying attention in the early 70's):

C-Mike Piazza
1B-Steve Garvey
2B-Davey Lopes
SS-Bill Russell (tie w/Cesar Izturis)
3B-Ron Cey
LF-Dusty Baker
CF-Reggie Smith
RF-Bill Buckner (played OF and 1B)
P-Fernando Valenzuela (close call over Sutton and Hershiser)
RP-Eric Gagne
Honorable mention to Kirk Gibson for the "shot heard around the world".

If I include prior to the early 70's (when I was too young to know), and Brooklyn (when I wasn't around), my list changes a great deal.
