The Brazilian loss was a surprise, but the English one was just plain stupidity. They let that one go and have no one to blame but themselves.

Portugal just showed that they can continue with the success they had in the last Euro (04), their keeper is da bomb when it comes to penalties!

France? -> "The Zizou show", he and his team were awesome today, the second half was world-class football!

I really hope Portugal can beat France, or Italy/Germany can beat them in the Final. I just have a natural distaste in my mouth for the French.  Silly

Patrick: I watched the last game in the city centre here and there were a bunch of french frogs in the restaurant/bar yelling "rouge" "rouge" everytime brazil got a yellow. After the 4 Carlsbergs I had the words "rouge" sounded even more pussy to me than ever before.

Well Lehmann put Germany through, Henry put France through, and how many Arsenal players took (and missed) penalties for England? None. That shows you something  Wink

Whats funny is that I thought the taxi fare on the display was the time! Thats when I realized I was really wasted when I pondered why it siad 15.20 and it was dark outside.

England lost because their big players failed to turn up, and it went to penalties again, penalties and England don't belong in the same sentence. Brazil's loss wasn't a suprise, i expected them to give France a game, but again, they have brilliant individuals like England, but they haven't gelled as a team. Disappointed to see Brazil eliminated so early, they are part of the world cup furniture, but the best team won. The Arsenal heroics continue, Lehmann for Germany, Henry for France.  Smile

No need to - I've always supported "the Americans" when they were doing something worthwile (see that other thread)!  bigthumbsup

Or anybody else, for that matter; I was cheering for the good actions of the polish team as well when they were playing against our own team, even though I was happy that our guys finally made it through (and even deserved it!).

It's not (just) about whether you win or lose, but to a large degree also about how you do it!  bigthumbsup

Ahh, children... My sister is currently wearing an England wristband in one hand, and a Brazil one in the other. She was really upset when England lost earlier today... She went to see the Brazil game at grandma's, so I haven't seen her since. I don't think she'll be too happy when she comes back, especially when I start singing "na na nah nah, your team lost..." Big grin

Before I get flamed for setting a bad example as the oldest sister, she did the same yesterday after the Argentina game.  grumpy

I think it is imperative that Brazil gets off their butt and wow FIFA with their World Cup plans. If they can't do it then Argentina.

I don't care if Brazil wins the World Cup, but at least a World Cup in South America would guarantee that all the Europeans would be sent packing home by the quarter finals, as surely that Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Chile (plus Mexico from North America), would be in the final 8.

Derico, I just suggested your post to be deleted because you're just saying this to bash us Europeans. I've seen your other posts where you continued with this bashing.

Please, knock it off with your Europe bashing!

It would indeed seem fitting to have a World Cup (again) in either of those two...!

You'd still have to play well enough to get there! If the german team had expected to get in just on past merits, they'd have been kicked out as well - and many german fans would probably have applauded their opposition! Strong support for the "home team" can probably make a difference, but I'd say the quality of the team is still more important...!

I can see a southern american WC as a massively exciting event - so good luck for the bid and the preparations!  bigthumbsup

Deutschlaaaaand, Deutschlaaand, Deutschlaaaaaand, Deutschlaaaaaand.

Man, it finally paid off for me to bribe every referee... Brazil is out, England is out, the day is perfect  Wink

Honestly, England played well today. They would have even deserved to win, but I think it is somewhat justified that the teams which played the most boring football so far, England and Brazil, are out. I saw France twice, and I think they played pretty well against both Spain and Togo. Portugal also played rather nice football so far, at least sometimes. Even Italy had some nice matches.

So I think it is justified to have Italy, Portugal and France in the Semi-Final... Worthy opponents, so that our victory will be even greater  Wink

May the best team win. I hope it is Germany, but I can certainly live with another one... All 4 teams deserve to be in the semi-final...

So do I. IMO a World Cup in South America has been long overdue. But in 4 years, we'll have something new, a World Cup in Africa, something that has been even more overdue. Big grin

Yeah this would happen because the refs would let the diving slide and then fair playing non-pussy European teams minus Portugal and Italy will get massive amounts of yellow cards for the other teams grabbing their heads crying when the replay shows that they got kicked accidently in the hip.

Europe has NEVER won outside of Europe. South America has won in Europe, South America, North America (three times), and Asia once.

That should tell you somethings. Odds are that there is something wrong with Europe, and not with South America, North America, and Asia.

I am rewatching the game right now on ESPN and I saw that Wayne Rooney "red card" and i have to say you can look at his leg and his momentum just carries his leg into the guy. Was it worthy of a red card no but then again when are half the cards given really necessary in this World Cup?

Brazil didn't play with a sense of urgency until stoppage time that was their fault. Brazil was just out hustled and out played . So where is the World Cup in 2010? Looking forward To Brazil and England only making it further in thatone. Brazil should be an exciting team in 4 years.

a World Cup in South America would guarantee that all the Europeans would be sent packing home by the quarter finals

Yeah, like that's ever happened before  Smile. Actually, there's never been an all South American final anywhere but there have been all European final matches.

Well because of the corruption at FIFA there has not been a World Cup in South America since 1978, and then there were only 16 teams in the tournament and the only good ones at that time were Brazil and Argentina.

Mexico's level is way up, as is Ecuador, as well as Colombia. Peru always plays well in South America and Uruguay plays MUCH better. With 32 teams now, there would at least be 11 teams from the region, and fewer European teams.

The only reason there have been all European finals is because Europe gets too many World Cup spots. If you have a pair of dice with the numers '1', '2', and the other four remaining sides of the dice have the number '3', it is much more likely you will have pairing results of '3', than '1' or '2'.Simple odds.

And there are more countries in Europe than there are in South America. I'm not saying we'll never see an all South American final but to have no European teams in the quarter-finals - no chance!  Smile

Well, yes, but not because of talent. Again, in a South American world cup I think at least 5 teams in the quarters would be South American, maybe six. And then probably Mexico too, which is 7.

First off there are twice as many countries in Europe than there are in South America, so it is only logical for Europe to get more spots than South America. I doubt that Europe having more spots than other continents is the reason to why there have been all Euro finals.

Colombia was going to be the host of the 86 World Cup, but screwed up and it went to Mexico in the end, but still somehow it remains FIFA's fault  Wink

Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia might play better at higher level, but they still haven't won the World Cup  Wink

Maybe because up until now no country in South America has the venues and infastruture to host the biggest sporting event in the world. Hopefully it changes in 2014 because the games would then be in a better time-zone Big grin

What makes you think this would happen, the only factor I could even remotely see causing this is the weather which could make it harder for the euros to adapt to.

As for this WC neither Brazil or Argentina were treated unfairly by the refs significantly enough to cost them the game. The Germany goal was perfectly fair from what I saw.
