FIFA To Trial 2 Referees?

Wed Jul 05, 2006 5:44 pm

Apparently FIFA are going to conduct trials at using two referees during matches to see if it improves the game. Apparently they tried it once before in Italy but the results were not great.

Whats everyones thoughts on this?

I suppose it is worth trying out, its going to be less obtrusive than stopping / starting to consult video replays, and might reduce some of the poor decisions we have seen so far. I can see it causing confusion though with one wanting to give a free kick and the other not, eg.

However the ref already has 2 linesmen (or "assistant referees"), perhaps these should be consulted more often rather than adding a 4th official on the pitch..?

So how will it work? One for each half of the pitch? One to stand next to the post so it can be confirmed whether the ball has crossed the line or not?

I think it'll add confusion. Will there be a main ref and deputy or will they have equal responsibilities? What if they blow for 2 different fouls at the same time... which is the foul? What if one is for one side and one for the other, e.g. a foul and an off the ball incident?

They could improve the game by scrapping the offside rule or just have offside in the penalty area. How many wrong decisions are made? Goals that shouldn't be and vv.

I'd hesitate to pass judgement given the current scandal in Italian football with referees being chosen for matches.

Yes, me too. Like you said I can see situations where one ref gives a foul and the other chooses to play advantage etc. Which referee to the players follow? Do they stop, or keep going?
